 About the Country Program in Ethiopia

Action Against Hunger has been operational in Ethiopia since 1984 responding to both chronic and acute needs through a multi-sectoral strategy where Nutrition, Food Security and Livelihoods, WASH, and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support activities are integrated to have a meaningful impact on people’s resilience.

Action Against Hunger currently operates in 5 different regions (Oromia, Somali, Amhara, Benishangul Gumuz and Gambella) with a portfolio of 20m USD/year of emergency, resilience building, research and innovation programs. We have a country team of around 600 staff in 17 regional and satellite offices. Our main donors in Ethiopia in 2020/2021 are: BHA, ECHO, Europaid, UNHCR, UNICEF, GFFO, BPRM, SIDA, EHF, WFP, CIAA and others.

General Assignments / Scope of the Role:

The Health and Nutrition DPM is under the direct supervision of the Nutrition and Health Program Manager. The HNDPM ensure that the objectives of project met and supervise the nutrition program implementation in the camp and host community. S/he will also make sure that CMAM/ IYCF/GMP services and quality of care has delivered to all beneficiaries in line with standard guidelines, principles, SPHERE standards and IYCF-E multi-sectoral framework for action in refugee setting. Health and Nutrition DPM will also lead and participate in the designing and implementation of CMAM/IYCF/GMP capacity building activities in close consultation with line managers, health and Nutrition team and project stakeholders. S/he is expected to establish and maintain productive working relationships with line managers, project staff, local government authorities and, beneficiaries. Moreover, s/he will represent Action Against Hunger in local level Nutrition, including Health and Nutrition coordination platforms and fora:

The Deputy Health and Nutrition PM’s purpose, engagement, and deliveries are:

Purpose: Provides technical support and supervision to nutrition team on the services and analyses the implementation of activities to improve service delivery quality in the camp supported by AAH.

Engagement: Collaborates with Community outreach team, supervisors, IYCF supervisors, HN officers, and partners to amplify our work in tackling acute malnutrition as well as building synergies with other sectors to promote a multispectral approach to address underlying causes of undernutrition. Engages with nutrition related working groups within camp and represents AAH’s nutrition efforts externally.

Delivery: Leads/monitor the day to day activities in the camp and host community, provide supervision and monitoring to the team, produce report and support the coordination and ensure the beneficiaries has got the wright service.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Acting as the direct technical supervisor for Health and Nutrition Supervisors based in Woreda/refugee Operation.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with many interruptions. Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

  • The duties of the job require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required.

While performing the duties of this job in the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high-security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as infectious diseases.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications and Professional Experience

  • Academic Background: Advanced degree in Public Health, Nursing, Nutrition and other related field.
  • Experience: At least 4-to-5 years of practical and proven experience in managing Health and Nutrition relief and development programs and staff.
  • Exposure and participation in national and subnational health and nutrition coordination platforms and TWGs
  • Having a better understanding of the global and national humanitarian and development landscape and dynamics
  • Experience in leading program development, including needs assessment, program design, and proposal development
  • Familiarity with donor funded projects requirements and procedures
  • Experience in and exposure to INGOs setting is preferred
  • Previous experience working for an international NGO is preferable

 Required Skills & Competencies

  • Experience in nutrition area, Good team spirit, Humanitarian spirit, Knowledge of nutrition and experience in Nutritional program (OTP/SFP/BSFP) and IYC, Capacity to manage priorities, creativity, flexibility; demonstrable ability at report writing report writing English (fluent) and local language of the refugee (asset).
  • Strong communication, networking and representation skill; good strategic and analytical abilities; Embracing Diversity, Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation, good experience in capacity building; and excellent communication skill, proficient in use of MS office and email applications, capable of working in team.
