Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.

In collaboration with Karolinska Instituted, Stockholm, Sweden, Addis Ababa University college of health science and Tikur Anbessa Hospital, All Africa Leprosy, Tuberculosis and Rehabilitation Training Centre (ALERT) and Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) has planned to conduct a research study entitled: “Exploring epigenetic alterations of cellular immunity in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis with relevance for new therapy using epigenetic- and immune-modulating drugs”.

The role of the assistant researcher (clinical nurse)

  • Conduct clinical evaluation on the study participants
  • Recruit, screen and enroll eligible participants
  • Ensure eligibility criteria for proper enrollment of potential study participants
  • Perform consenting process with eligible study participants
  • Inform study physicians for patient evaluation
  • Fill in case record forms, laboratory results and other necessary information on the study questionnaires
  • Perform clinical tests relevant to the study and follow up with responsible clinical doctor
  • Collect specimens from eligible study participants at the time of diagnosis and at follow-up such as blood and direct as well as induced sputum sampling
  • Communicate with AHIR team for sample transfer to AHIR lab timely
  • Trace and follow (give appointments, put reminders, and call missing patients) study participants on a timely basis together with the study/field coordinator

Job Requirements

  • BSc degree in Nursing with 2 years of documented experience; or MSc degree in Nursing 
  • Experience in collecting patient information (CRF) and clinical samples for the research purpose
  • Experience from work in previous research projects related to tuberculosis (TB) disease is an advantageous
  • Good communication ability and commitment
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and good personal organization skills
  • Good judgment and willingness to take initiative when appropriate
  • Proven experience from work and meeting patients at the Chest unit is required
  • Goal oriented and time conscious

Salary: According to the Institute's scale for contract employees. Hours of Work: Are governed by the laws of Ethiopia. However, the nature of the work is such that it might require working late hours and weekends
