Main Purpose of Job

 Breakthrough ACTION Ethiopia Communication for Health is a 12-month (October 1, 2021–September 30, 2022) USAID field-support and The Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) funded activity that intends to address gaps on coordination and collaboration between relevant sectors, and communication and community engagement gaps in early prevention, detection, and response to emergency at different levels. The activities are aligned with the USAID/Ethiopia’s Country Development Cooperative Strategy (CDCS 2019–2024) priorities, and GHSA package to meet the IHR 2005. Breakthrough ACTION Ethiopia Communication for Health project is hereafter referred to as “Breakthrough ACTION Ethiopia” or “the project” in the document for ease of referencing. The project will focus on promoting priority behaviors on malaria (with a focus on promoting use of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs); RMNCH; nutrition; FP; COVID-19 and zoonotic diseases risk communication. 

Major Responsibilities

  •  Contribute to the design and implementation of risk and public health emergency communication interventions
  • Support the translation and contextualization of RC messages and materials (print, audiovisuals, and guides into local language
  • Facilitate the analysis of priority risk behaviors for zoonotic diseases and health emergencies together with identification of key messages and priority audience
  • Support the Continuous analysis on change of community perception on prevention and control of zoonotic diseases and emergency health
  • Contribute to the development and dissemination of SBCC Materials on Zoonotic disease prevention and control as well as emergency health communication interventions
  • Work closely with the regional, zonal and woreda one health coordination mechanisms to strengthen their communication, coordination and collaboration before, during and after public health emergencies that are related to zoonotic diseases
  • Provide support to explore, map out and maintain up-to-date database of public sector, multilateral, and civil society actors as well as major private sector players relevant for zoonotic diseases risk communication and prevention activities
  • Closely work with the regional staff to coordinate GHSA RC activities with other project activities of JHU CCP
  • Develop detail action plan for the approved activities of the GHSA RC project by place, timing and required resources
  • Proactively coordinate the timely collection, analysis, reporting and documentation of the project activities
  • Closely work with the monitoring, learning and evaluation team of JHU CCP to ensure all implemented activities and changes are properly documented and reported to inform decision making
  • Provide support for expansion, follow-up and updating, and maintaining smooth follow of information on national, regional, and zonal one health telegram channels and one health Ethiopia webpage.
  • Collect weekly, monthly, and quarterly performance of the project and send to the GHSA manager on timely bases
  • Support creating a mechanism for tracking, analysis and addressing rumor and misconceptions, to facilitate positive change and impact on disease burden
  • Perform other Zoonotic Diseases risk and emergency health communication related activities as needed.

Location of position: Addis Ababa with frequent field trip to project sites

Duration of Employment:  July 31, 2022 with possible extension 

Job Requirements

Knowledge, skills and experience required

  • MPH or BSC in general public health, health education, health communications, behavioral sciences, community development, or related field;
  • Veterinary Health qualification is an added advantage
  • Fluency in English and Amharic;
  • Knowledge of at least one other local languages an added advantage
  • At least five years progressively responsible experience in health communication, emergency management, community mobilization and mass communication
  • Experience of working in pastoralist areas and work experience on endemic and pandemic zoonotic diseases management such as Ebola, Avian Flu, Rabies, Anthrax, Brucellosis and emergency health communication an added advantage
