We are pleased to announce the following vacancy for an Executive Head of Compliance and ERM within the Legal and Risk Function in Ethiopia. In keeping with our current business needs, we are looking for a person who meets the criteria indicated below.

Detailed Description

Reporting to the Chief Legal and Risk Officer, the role holder will be responsible for ensuring that Safaricom Ethiopia is compliant with all applicable laws, regulations and rules; and all company policies, codes and standards; and to implement adequate systems and processes to monitor and enforce compliance.

The role holder will also be responsible for enterprise risk management across the business conducting risk assessments as well as reviews of new products and services launched by Safaricom Ethiopia to ensure that all critical and high business risks have been proactively identified and mitigated by business and that risks are presented, mitigated and discussed at the Risk Management Committee and the Audit and Risk Committee.

Job Responsibilities

  • Institutionalize and manage the implementation of compliance standards across Safaricom Ethiopia.
  • Assist and oversee implementation of effective systems and processes to ensure compliance with all laws and regulations, policies, rules, and codes and industry standards
  • Oversight of the Legal and Policy Universe for Safaricom Ethiopia
  • Implement, enforce, and conduct periodic reviews of the Anti-bribery and Sanctions programs across Safaricom Ethiopia.
  • Assist in the implementation of the Trust by Design methodology and ensure that all controls are periodically reviewed and closed within the timeframes set by Safaricom Ethiopia.
  • Monitor developments in the legal and regulatory and governance environment and keep abreast of new policies and legislation as well as changes to existing legislation in several operating countries
  • Perform compliance risk assessments and develop compliance risk management strategies
  • Provide training and advice on compliance related matters
  • Monitor, review and enforce compliance with all Safaricom Ethiopia Policies; laws and regulations; policies, rules and codes; and industry standards
  • Liaise with applicable stakeholders to ensure an integrated approach to legal and policy compliance management
  • Preparation of reports to various audit, risk and compliance, as well as social and ethics, committees.
  • To manage the Business Risk and to ensure that Enterprise Risk Management is embedded within the company, ensuring that risks are identified, monitored and kept up to date, for Safaricom Ethiopia.
  • To ensure that Information Governance Risks have been identified and mitigated to the company’s approved level.
  • To ensure that all critical and high strategic risks are identified by business and reported Safaricom Ethiopia and its stakeholders, as and when required.
  • To ensure that all critical and high new business risks have been identified and mitigated before any new product, service, promotion or campaign is launch with Safaricom Ethiopia.
  • To perform risk reviews using a consistent methodology on all areas of the Safaricom Ethiopia business including products, services, promotions, and campaigns for the Safaricom Ethiopia business.
  • To ensure that a risk prioritization model is utilized to evaluate high risks.
  • To liaise with other Safaricom Ethiopia departments and Subject Matter Experts (SME) to ensure risks are identified and mitigation controls are implemented by business. 
  • Identify new and emerging risk trends and present these to the risk committees.
  • To assist in the development and implementation of the new business risk management strategy that aligns and supports the organization’s strategy.
  • To assist in the creation position papers with regards to risk management for the organization.
  • To perform research in the field of risk management and maintain expert knowledge within the field on current legislative, risks, technology and industry best practice.
  • To prepare the required report packs for, the RMC, the Audit Committee and Safaricom Ethiopia’s Financial and Risk Review Committees.
  • To ensure potential new and emerging risks and threats are highlighted and reported to management on a quarterly basis.
  • To liaise with the Vodafamily stakeholders as to ensure required compliance with the larger Vodafamily Group risk management principles.
  • To undertake other projects as required under the control of the Chief Legal and Risk Officer.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience: 

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant compliance and risk management experience
  • LLB Degree, Bachelor’s degree in Law or a Bachelor’s degree in Technology
  • Higher relevant law degrees will be an advantage
  • Completed Certificate in Compliance Management or Risk Management would be an added advantage.
  • Higher relevant specialist qualifications in e.g., compliance/risk management will be an advantage
