Purpose of the position:
The environmental coordinator will provide technical lead and support on environmental safeguards, climate risk management and sustainability of the program interventions (public works-biodiversity protection, natural resource management, construction of capital projects) in Oromia region. S/he will perform technical guidance, supervision, monitoring and evaluation of program activities against standards of the safeguard guidelines and work closely with regional program officers and consortium environmental lead to ensure USAID environmental compliance and GoE environmental & social safeguard. The job holder will coordinate government stakeholders and implementing partner to address environmental issues.
Major Responsibilities:
- Ensure program activities are implemented in compliance with USAID environmental procedures and GoE environmental policies across the region,
- Prepare tools and checklists for assessing the environmental impact of SPIR II planned activities
- Ensure whether site specific EMMP prepared for public works to address environmental risk
- Train government & program staffs on safeguarding measures, climate risk management and the specific mitigation strategies in the EMMP.
- Facilitate the preparation and updating of environmental safeguard lessons/results by the USAID’s requirements.
- Provide technical feedbacks for capital projects and PW activities like Small Scale Irrigation (SSI) and others while on progress to ensure they are being implemented in an environmentally sound way
- Prepare annual Environmental Status Report (ESR) of RFSA operation in the region
Job Requirements
Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience
Required Professional Experience:
- 6 years’ experience in environmental safeguarding, environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservations and management with NGO or USAID projects
Qualification required:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree environmental science, soil & water conservation, natural resource management or related
Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications:
- Knowledge of GoE environmental policies and USAID environmental regulations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Strong problem solving, interpersonal and negotiation skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
Working Environment / Conditions:
Travel up to 25% of time
