Purpose of the Job:

To take a lead in the day to day implementation of research, advocacy and campaign plans to enhance the promotion and protection of Women’s rights in Ethiopia.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of annual plans of the Function on protection and promotion of women’s rights;
  • Conduct awareness raising and campaigns on women rights to ensure adherence to national and international protection standards and guidelines;
  • Conduct assessments for identification of women’s rights protection needs;
  • Actively contribute to the execution of legislative and policy initiatives regarding women’s rights;
  • Communicate with and influence a range of external stakeholders and advocacy targets including the Government and relevant authorities on the basis of identified gaps for the effective promotion and protection of women’s rights and to give them voice;
  • Conduct or support the undertaking of research and analysis to formulate advocacy briefs and calls for the promotion and protection of the women’s rights;
  • Conduct legal review in relation to women’s rights to write advocacy and campaign messages and materials for amendment or enactment of laws that afford better protection to the rights of women as well as to ensure their compliance with constitutional, international and regional human rights standards;
  • Organize and manage advocacy and campaign events;
  • Support the initiation of nationwide and regional movements to advocate and campaign for the promotion and protection of women rights, including the ratification and implementation of relevant international and regional human rights instruments;
  • Ensure mainstreaming of children rights as relevant in other advocacy and campaign activities of EHRC;
  • Conduct mapping of stakeholders that can provide support to women who suffered human rights violation and are in need of support;
  • Actively contribute to building capacity, knowledge, values and standards based on identified needs of both governmental and non-governmental national stakeholders on children rights;
  • Conduct and follow up on advocacy initiatives to ensure implementation of recommendations, general comments and concluding observations of international and regional human rights bodies’ at the national level;
  • Participate in discussion forums set in institutions and organizations, including other NHRIs for joint programming, sharing of experience and promising practices, regarding the promotion and protection of women rights in their policies and organizational operations.
  • Keep the Coordinator informed with regular detailed and accurate reports on progress and challenges in advocating and campaigning for the promotion and protection of women and women rights conducted by the Team.
  • Undertake other duties and tasks deemed necessary.

REPORT TO: Director, Women and Children Rights

DURATION: Open/Indefinite Contract

SALARY RANGE: Gross monthly salary of ETB 22,014.00- ETB 26,219.00 plus ETB 6,000.00 Housing allowance and ETB 1,900.00 Transport allowance, depending on candidates qualification, experience and earning history

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • MA in Human Rights Law, LL.M in Human Rights, LL.M in International Law, LL.M in Law (Public Law relevant to Human Rights), and Gender Studies. Candidates with Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) but with exceptional experience can be considered
  • 5 years of relevant experience for LLM. Experience in Management of Resources.
  • Computer literate. 
  • Knowledge of Amharic is required. Knowledge of other local languages is advantageous.

Scope of Work The consultant will be responsible for preparing, delivering, and reporting on a four-day Law Enforcement Agencies–Media-CSOs Dialogue Forum. The forum will cover key thematic areas, including: • Media freedom, constitutional guarantees, and rule of law principles with the focus on the international and regional frameworks (including UDHR, ICCPR, ACHPR, and UN frameworks on journalist safety) to set the context. • National legal frameworks governing media and freedom of expression, and their implications for law enforcement, media operation and CSOs advocacy practice. • Digital rights, cyber-security, and the protection of media and CSOs actors in online spaces. • Co-creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or a Code of Conduct to guide Law Enforcement Agencies–Media-CSOs engagement, during special events, particularly in the context of the upcoming election. The consultant will facilitate discussions, group work, and role-play exercises to encourage dialogue, identify friction points, and propose practical solutions. Following the forum, the consultant is expected to prepare a concise report summarizing key outcomes, recommendations, and agreed next steps, as well as a draft SOP/Code of Conduct reflecting the contributions of participants.

Scope of Work The selected trainer will be responsible for designing and delivering a two-day capacity-building training for lawyers engaged in media and freedom of expression work in Ethiopia.
