About One Acre Fund

One Acre Fund works to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. In Ethiopia, we engage farmers in agroforestry and community-based seed multiplication. In partnership with the Amhara National Regional State, these programs have planted more than 10 million trees, produced over 500 MT of improved teff seed and reached more than 65,000 farmers. Now, we are now in an exciting phase of work in which we are trialing novel approaches and preparing for scale-up in the coming years. We have over 8000 employees globally, and our growing Ethiopia headquarters are in Bahir Dar, Amhara Region, with small offices in Addis Ababa, Finote Selam and Motta.

About the Role

The Field officer will be an essential part of our Extension Pilot team in one of One Acre Fund's fastest growing country programs. The Ethiopia program is poised to serve over 100,000 farmers in 2021, grow 10 million trees and launch a renewed seed multiplication program. In 2025, we plan to serve over one million farmers, employing over 1000 people on a permanent or temporary basis.

The Field Officer will manage the One Acre Fund Trees Extension pilot, which requires close collaboration with four target woreda offices of Agriculture in the Central Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region. You will report directly to the Partnerships Associate and will oversee the Pilot project in partnership with the target woreda offices of agriculture and assigned Focal Persons.

Responsibilities

Coordinate the Trees Extension pilot in the target woredas

  • Conduct field visits and make basic technical observations at OAF pilot project sites at the kebele level;
  • Lead monthly update meetings with pilot woreda Focal Persons (FPs);
  • Monitor and ensure that the pilot is on track based on the project calendar and MoU;
  • Meet scale goals in terms of number of trees to produce and plant and farmers served;
  • Run the technical trainings for trainers on nursery and seedling management with woreda FPs and government stakeholders, following One Acre Fund's talking points,
  • Anticipate risks and identify and resolve challenges in the field, working In coordination with government stakeholders;

Provide link between Pilot Woredas and OAF HQ

  • Collect and share KPIs and photo verifications each month from Focal Persons, use this to drive performance
  • Write excellent by-weekly reports that summarize all the major issues in your woredas
  • Share all problems with Focal Persons in a timely manner, help to brainstorm solutions, implement the discussed solutions in a timely manner

Manage relationships with woreda government

  • Serve as primary day-to-day liaison with pilot woreda stakeholders such as Agri. office experts and focal person,
  • Organize and run meetings and TOTs with the woredas with support from your manager
  • Gather technical and local-context knowledge from the woreda and kebele actors, share with your manager
  • Solve any problems that arise in the woreda or kebele relationships with the help of your manager

Qualifications

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Agriculture or a related field
  • 2+ years work experience in field extension with farmers.
  • Leadership Experience
  • Knowledge of the basics of email, Microsoft Excel and Word, good typing skills
  • Good written and spoken English
