INTRODUCTION

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants. The organization has offices across the region, and has been operational in Ethiopia since 2009. With funding from bilateral and multilateral donors, DRC is currently implementing a range of activities across Ethiopia and Djibouti, including WASH and shelter provision, child and youth protection, gender based violence response, awareness-raising of migration risks, protection monitoring of migration routes, and livelihoods support for returning migrants or those at-risk of migration.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is implementing the Ethiopia Migration Programme (EMP), a UK-funded programme to make migration safer and protect would-be migrants and refugees from unsafe irregular migration through and from Ethiopia.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

Under the supervision of EMP’s Programme Team, the Data collectors/Enumerators will be responsible for administrating structured interviews with respondents via telephone or in field sites in Addis Ababa. In addition, perform registrations of beneficiaries, registration of distribution of items and materials for beneficiaries, prepare reports, and related tasks. This will include ensuring data quality by explaining questions to respondents when respondents do not understand them, and ensuring data protection as per DRC’s data protection principles.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend and actively participate in a data collection training day;
  • Administer structured interviews with respondents via telephone (both for pre-test and for actual data collection) or in field sites in Addis Ababa;
  • Ensure data quality by explaining questions to respondents when respondents do not understand them;
  • Report daily on the activities conducted and issues encountered to supervisors and implement any recommendations as suggested by the EMP Programme Team;
  • Respect DRC’s data protection principles

Protection

  • Support Protection team during Cash and, NFI and other distribution activity through registration.
  • Enrolled in documentation of distribution files and strengthening better qualified document for further utilization.
  • Involve in timely beneficiary need identification being under the supervision of the protection team.
  • Provision of relevant information related with Returnees gap and service on available services.
  • Managing activities forwards by protection team with a manner humble consideration and respecting DRC code of conduct.
  • Report the accomplished activities for protection officers up on request at a timely manner.
  • Good handling skill of government stack holders and beneficiary at returnee shelters based on the direction given by protection team.

Job Requirements

Experience and Technical Competencies: (include years of experience)

  • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in psychology, sociology, statistics, economics and computer sciences or relevant fields
  • Experience in conducting surveys and assessments (preferably related to migration though not a requirement);
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience preferably with an INGO.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in mobile data collection technology, Kobo toolbox an advantage

Education (include certificates, licenses etc.): 

  • Certificate in psychology, sociology, statistics, economics and computer sciences or relevant field

Languages: (indicate fluency level)

  • Excellent verbal and written proficiency in English and Amharic.
  • Fluent in one or both of the following languages: Afan Oromo & Tigrinya.
