Palladium is seeking to recruit an Associate, Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL) to be assigned full-time to the Partnerships for Forests (P4F) project, based out of the Addis Ababa, Ethiopia office.

Partnerships for Forests (P4F)

P4F supports investment models in which companies, the public sector, and communities can achieve improved returns from forests and sustainable land use.

The project has regional hubs in West and Central Africa, East Africa, Latin America, and Indonesia.

The project’s main focus is supporting the development of Forest Partnerships. These are partnerships between private sector companies, public sector actors and communities that catalyse investment in forests and sustainable land use. The project also supports activities that strengthen demand for sustainable commodities and activities to create an enabling environment for sustainable investments.

The Position

The Associate, Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL) will provide support in the delivery of results reporting, knowledge products, and events. They will be a core part of the East Africa team and assist colleagues and grantees in the design, writing, and review of various types of results.

The successful candidate will gain broad exposure to designing, conducting research, monitoring and evaluating, and reviewing reports of how forest and sustainable land use projects have been delivering positive impacts.

This is an important role in the P4F team, with the position fixed term until the end of the P4F Programme in November 2023The role is offered full-time (40 hours), at 5 days per week, based out of the Addis Ababa, Ethiopia office.

Primary responsibilities

• Lead in developing, collecting data, writing, and reviewing case studies that accurately depict project’s achievements, challenges, and lessons. Examples of P4F’s case studies can be found on our website here;
• Support with ongoing data gathering and analysis from selected P4F grantees;
• Visit selected P4F projects in the field to assess, support, and quality assure their MEL plans and activities;
• Assist P4F colleagues in MEL activities that include applying assessment tools, designing case studies, providing training, assisting with data analysis and presentation, developing action plans and other technical assistance as requested;
• Assist P4F colleagues, including key decision-making bodies such as the East Africa regional leadership in accessing and applying MEL data and evidence;
• Facilitate discussions and workshops with colleagues to ensure learnings are captured across all areas of the program and the team adapts to changing contexts/demands;
• Contribute to MEL trainings for P4F colleagues;
• Support dissemination of lessons learned and best practices and use of innovative methods to reach stakeholder networks (supporting one of our core outputs of providing “leadership, collaboration and learning” within the forests and sustainable land use sector);
• Produce briefs, sections of reports/guidelines and presentations for specific assignments, in consultation with P4F colleagues;
• Other duties as assigned including organizing and facilitating meetings.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has the following skills and attitudes:

Essential

• Demonstrable experience working on theories of change, log frames, and case study development
• Ability to distil large amounts of information into a short and easy to read material often for a public, non-academic audience
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with experience working in a collaborative manner across a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary team
• Demonstrated self-starter who thrives in a dynamic and fast-moving environment and enjoys finding solutions for often unexpected issues
• Previous experience developing and delivering MEL experience planning, managing, and reviewing multiple deliverables with tight deadlines
• Ability to work flexibly, and to tight deadlines, maintaining consistently high standards and attention to detail

Desirable

• Good knowledge and understanding of tropical forests, land tenure and sustainable land use issues, with sectoral experience in East Africa;
• Fluency in written and spoken English is essential, knowledge of French language helpful;
• Experience working collaboratively with a range of external and public organizations, including private business leaders, local authorities, government agencies, and not-for-profit sectors.
