Job Description

The Agronomist has the responsibility to provide agronomist advisory to the Smallholder farmers for the successful production and productivity of horticultural products and ensures that Shega Fre Agri-business achieves its Organizational objectives in obtaining, supply and distributing quality Agri-products to its customers and optimally managing the daily activities of smallholder farmers around Dugda, Adami Tulu, Ziway, Fentale, Bora and the neighboring Woredas in Eastern Shawa and West Arsi Zone.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparing and managing plans from the preparation to the harvest period for the growth of vegetables and fruit improvement and enhanced production
  • Planning and managing high production of vegetables and fruits by implementing improved agricultural inputs,
  • Develop innovative research-based techniques in agronomist roles and programs.
  • Create strategies in strengthening vegetable and fruit production and management.
  • Study, assess and evaluate soil chemistry and soil testing.
  • Assesses vegetable and fruit production of the farm, and post-harvest profit loss challenges
  • Improve agricultural production and processing capabilities, provide assistance on the cultivation of fruit and vegetables
  • Evaluates and improves seed/seedling quality
  • Carries out laboratory tests of soil, seed, and vegetable samples, as required
  • Performs quality control for seed caliber and soil standards
  • Keeps records of research, testing, and results
  • Prepares analysis and data presentation
  • Find ways to maximize vegetable production from a given acreage of soil.
  • Perform experiments to determine and then maximize plant nutrients and soil health.
  • Collaborate with farmers and vegetable researchers to conduct a detailed analysis of vegetable and fruit data
  • Provide valuable insights that lead to solutions, and drive higher vegetable and fruit yields.
  • Initiate newer techniques in soil management processes.
  • Study and evaluate plants, their biological aspects, and their growth behavior.
  • Conduct research on the latest trends in vegetable and soil management.
  • Develop ways to make vegetables more pest-resistant.
  • Help and define planting plans, select irrigation techniques, provide advisory on agricultural inputs usage (Seed/Seedling, Fertilizers, Chemicals, etc.,.), and plan harvests.
  • Carry out evaluations of the economic aspects and environmental impact of specific vegetables and provide consultancy and advisory services to the retail industries
  • Advising on disease prevention and treatment of Vegetables and Fruits

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Science
  • Five years and above relevant work experience

Other Required Skill and Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of legislation applicable to the agricultural technology sector
  • Outstanding research and analytical skills
  • Ability to prepare reports
  • Knowledge of Affan Oromo/Multilingual would be an advantage
  • In-depth knowledge of soil and vegetable principles
