Internal/External Vacancy Announcement

The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to heal survivors of torture and war trauma. We provide direct care for those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture and war trauma, research and advocate for human rights and end the practice of torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, USA with offices in Africa and the Middle East.

 Objective:

This position aims to further the sustainability goals of CVT-Ethiopia through 1) extensive external capacity building through the development and delivery of training programs with strategic partners and 2) building internal capacity of CVT interdisciplinary clinical staff to provide such trainings. The goal of the trainings will be to build the partners’ capacity to work with torture and war survivors. The Training Manager will work closely with Supervisors/Trainers from the three CVT disciplines (Counseling, Physiotherapy, and Social Work) to develop materials, organize and deliver these trainings. The Training Manager will build the internal capacity of CVT’s interdisciplinary clinical staff to deliver high quality professional trainings.

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • 20% Develop external partnerships: Develop key strategic external partnerships to further sustainability goals, in collaboration with the Clinical Programs Director, Zonal Manager and the Trainers. This includes contributing to MOU negotiations, providing technical assessments and developing in-depth training plans with each partner.
  • 40% External capacity building: Conduct training needs assessments. Develop professional training materials for the effective delivery of professional trainings that are adapted to the needs of each partner organization. Organize delivery of trainings to strategic partners. Manage training schedules and keep library of training materials. Ensure that materials are routinely updated, revise newly developed materials to be professionalized, in-line with adult learning best practices and consistent with CVT formatting. Liaise with ICLs for translation of materials as necessary. Develop evaluation tools for trainings (with M&E).
  • 30% Internal clinical training capacity building: Develop capacity of CVT-Tigray’s interdisciplinary clinical staff to deliver high quality professional trainings through mentoring, live supervision of trainings, coaching and providing formal Training of Trainers (ToTs). Develop protocols and training manuals or guidances to support the capacity of CVT-Tigray’s interdisciplinary clinical staff to deliver these trainings.
  • 10% Other Duties: Participate in other program and organization-wide activities, meetings and trainings. Complete administrative responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • This job profile can be adapted and changed according to the evolution of CVT activities.

 Duration: 1-year employment agreement

Report to: Physiotherapist/Trainer(s) and Psychotherapist/Trainer, Zonal Manager

Supervisees: No direct reports. Indirect coaching, mentoring and supervision role with clinical staff conducting trainings.

Location: Based in Shire with visits to other CVT operation sites within Tigray and possibly elsewhere in Ethiopia

 Internal contacts: Clinical Programs Director, Supervisors/Trainers in all three disciplines (Counseling, Physiotherapy and Social Work) and M&E staff.

Terms of Employment: the contract is effective from February 2022 through January 2023 depending on funding availability.

Job Requirements

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Masters or advanced degree in psychology, physiotherapy, social work or related field, with licensures preferred
  • 5-10 years of clinical experience including at least two years in the field of trauma rehabilitation
  • 5-10 years experience conducting trainings or other adult education activities, engaging in training development

Demonstrated coordination and management experience

  • Preferred background, education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations
  • PhD or clinical doctorate in psychology, physiotherapy, social work or related field
  • Experience liaising with international and local NGOs

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluency and written skills in English and preferably Tigrigna.
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills and ability to adapt approach to audience (from professional to paraprofessional to community-based).
  • Proven experience in the development of training programs and materials (for both non-clinical and clinical trainees). Experience interacting with academic training programs and government entities preferred.
  • Proven experience in training needs assessments; training program monitoring & evaluation.
  • Demonstrated application of interdisciplinary clinical approach
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Power Point and Excel)
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including cultural sensitivity
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical skills, preferably trauma-informed
  • Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management (including the ability to meet deadlines)
  • Interest in or commitment to human rights
