Job Description

The purpose of the Field Data Collector is to comprehensively compile a list of all potential trail bridges sites in specific Zones, Woredas and Kebeles. The data collector will record detailed information in Microsoft Excel about each site. The detailed information will be obtained through communication with Zones, Woredas, and Kebeles officials over the phone. In addition, the data collectors will visit and conduct assessments in Woredas and Zones that selected Woreda/ Zone per region. While visiting sites the data collector will speak to residents and leaders to gather mandatory information as per the format which includes surveying individuals, taking GPS reading, photos, and ask about any trailbridge sites which may have not been identified by Woredas and complete the required information.

All the work for this assignment will take place through calling and communicating all Woredas and Zones in the assigned region and visiting selected Woreda/ or Zone. 

Duties and responsibilities

Assess bridge requests using B2P and Helvetas procedure

  • Collect a list of all trail bridges needed for assigned region and complete the format through communicating all Woredas and Kebeles in the region over phone;
  • Accurately record all data for the assigned region using B2P’s trailbridge request catalogue procedure;
  • Vet all trailbridge requests by following B2P’s vetting guide and decision matrix for determining the validity of all trailbridge requests;
  • After vetting all trailbridge requests for a given administrative boundary, complete the project assessment at each site using the program TaroWorks on a tablet or smartphone;
  • Plan trips to reach requested trailbridges, so that the safe and time-efficient routes are used for one Zone/Woreda per region for full coverage assessment;
  • Coordinate with local officials to identify any locations which may have not been identified by telephone;
  • Record critical information such as GPS coordinates, photos, and other high-level information necessary for full coverage assessment site;
  • Log and upload information to B2P’s bridge request database.

Job Requirements

Qualifications include:

  • Education – Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geography, GIS, or relevant field (Social Sciences, Statistics); 
  • Knowledge and experience in field data collection preferred
  • Familiar with conducting social surveys and collecting data on tablets/smart phones
  • Competent in Microsoft Office (Word & Excel)
  • Fluent in spoken and written English is required
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexible, capable of working independently, high integrity, and hard-working

Working Conditions

This job will require field work in the SNNPR region of Ethiopia for 25-50% of the time with 1 week of training in Addis Ababa. Because of the remoteness of the field work the assessor will be expected to work 6 days a week while in the field after collecting all trailbridge requests. The majority of the work will be communicating with local leaders, following up regularly via phone and in-person if needed. Data collectors are responsible for working at least 40 hours a week and managing their time with high integrity. The Data Collector will report directly to the National Coordinator who will review the quality of their work and approve timesheets. 

Physical Requirements

This job will require a significant amount of physical fitness and stamina as the assessor will often be required to walk 2 kilometers or more in mountainous terrain in order to reach a river crossing. This job may also require the assessor to use public and local transportation on difficult terrain upcountry.
