Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical and clinical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of diseases of public health importance, including COVID-19 through applied and basic biomedical research and postgraduate training. AHRI is currently functioning as one of the research units under the Ministry of Health, Ethiopia.

COVID-19 is a global pandemic and continues to impact the health and economy of millions. A vaccine is one of the effective tools to mitigate the pandemic. Currently, several COVID-19 vaccines have been approved or authorized by WHO for emergency use and have been administrated worldwide, including Ethiopia. AHRI received grants from the Ministry of Health to carry out research focusing on investigating the COVID-19 vaccines effectiveness, vaccine-induced immune responses, and immune correlates of protection. This collaborative research project is comprised of investigators from AHRI, EPHI, and CHS-AAU and will be conducted in Addis Ababa, the epicenter of the ongoing pandemic. 

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • Assists in the study with direction but does not have overall responsibility for these studies.
  • Responsible for ensuring study is compliance with local and federal laws and regulations
  • Coordinates activities of screens, enrolls, and recruits research participants, and performs intake assessments
  • Coordinates schedules and monitors research activities and subject participation.
  • Facilitates the implementation of major project deliverables and activities
  • Prepares domestic and international purchasing to requisition orders
  • Manages laboratory supplies/reagent stocks
  • Regular follow-up and tracking of project milestones, financial expenses (budget/invoices) and assist in report preparation 
  • Regularly assists in revising the implementation plan/study procedures as needed
  • Provide regular and frequent administrative assistance and logistic support to project leader
  • Prepares technical reports (enrollment updates and other additional site reports) on a regular basis
  • Setting up meeting agenda, minutes recording, organizing/attending online conferences 
  • Executes additional duties as may be assigned by the study leader to meet major
  • Provide administrative assistance and support to the overall project

Job Requirements

Educational requirements and work experience:

  • MSc Degree in Health/Biomedical Sciences from an accredited institution with valid evidence related of five years experience AND six publication points
  • Experience in projects related to COVID-19 pandemic response
  • Training/experience in quality control/assurance, GCP (preferred)
  • Capable of working independently with minimal supervision and also as part of a team
  • Experience in projects involving laboratory work -preferably on immunological methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience in data analyses and reporting

Skills/ abilities/ competencies required:

  • Ability to work in a collaborative, effective manner with all necessary research team members in order to meet the research objectives Excellent interpersonal communication skills and English proficiency   
  • Skilled with standard computer programs including the MS Office suite, GraphPad Prism, R, SPSS, STATA, Review manager EndeNote or Zotero 
  • Strong organizational skills; flexible to working off-working hours or on weekends
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to work with others/teamwork, including international collaborators
  • Ability to problem-solving and willingness to take self-initiatives
  • Willingness to take up additional responsibilities and continuous training as needed

Terms and conditions:

Work type: contract

Salary: A gross monthly salary of 25, 507 Birr

Benefits: 400 Birr for Internet and 300 Birr for Mobile cards per a month

Hours of Work: Are governed by the laws of Ethiopia. However, the nature project requires working in late hours or weekends

Duration of Contract: Full time contract basis for six months 

Work Location: Addis Ababa
