Job Description

The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) is seeking a Clinical Advisory for Physiotherapy Consultant to oversee physiotherapy services for international, interdisciplinary, trauma rehabilitation programs for survivors of torture and war trauma. The consultant will provide training and supervision of physiotherapy professionals both remotely and in-person, work closely with headquarters and in-country program staff to ensure high quality interdisciplinary care to clients, and provide support for new program development. They will conduct training and supervision visits to program sites as program needs dictate and risk management protocols allow.

We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We provide direct care for those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota with offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Responsibilities:

Supervision of Staff: Provide on-going clinical supervision. Support physiotherapy staff members with ongoing performance management. Assist in professional development planning by recommending training, readings and other opportunities. Provide confidential debriefing of professional staff members to ensure they are coping with the work. Provide regular contact using various methods.

Clinical Oversight: Provide on-going clinical oversight to ensure program goals are met and quality of services is delivered at a high level. Conduct visits to the locations of program operation. As appropriate, observe clinical activities and trainings conducted by clinical staff members. Review the training curriculum (internal and external) to ensure trainings are in line with CVT philosophy. Recommend changes in program activities, design and staffing, as needed, and support implementation of changes. Develop treatment guidelines and manualized interventions to facilitate the consistent delivery of high quality and structured care. Promote collaboration among all stakeholders, facilitate communication and serve as a liaison.

New Project Development: Assist in the project development and training of the Child and Family Manuals and Intervention. Assist in the development of new International Services projects, by participating in assessment trips, developing intervention models, recommending clinical program designs, and developing and delivering trainings associated with new initiatives, interventions, and manuals. Assist in the development of project proposals. Collaborate with Director of International Services and program managers to implement clinical components of new projects.

Qualifications

Hours: Part-time (20 hours per week)

Duration: 1-year consultancy with possibility for renewal, depending on funding availability and professional performance

Job Requirements

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy from an accredited university physiotherapy program
  • 5 years of direct physiotherapy experience working with torture and/or trauma survivors
  • Extensive experience supervising, training and mentoring physiotherapy staff members
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team with mental health workers
  • Experience working in a national or international NGO in a low-resourced context

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Master’s degree or higher in physiotherapy
  • 10 years of direct clinical experience working with torture and/or trauma survivors
  • Experience conducting remote clinical supervision

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • English language fluency
  • Other relevant language skills helpful, not required
  • Competency in working cross-culturally and with vulnerable populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Skilled at working as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of and demonstrated success developing curriculum and providing training for physiotherapists using various learning approaches and incorporating concepts of torture/ trauma rehabilitation, therapeutic neuroscience education, and mental health-physiotherapy approaches.
  • Knowledge of physiotherapy approaches adapted for low resource contexts preferred.
  • Commitment to engaging in human rights work, and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the organization
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management
  • Ability to travel up to 2 weeks at a time to international locations, some with limited amenities
