The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) wants to recruit employees in the following vacant positions the details of which are mentioned bellow.

About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131 District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee and 5871 Kebele Red Cross committees.

ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

Key performance Areas  

  • Plans, organizes, directs and controls health and WASH activities of the work unit; Formulates/reviews policies, procedures strategies, guidelines/handbooks, models, methodologies and standard packages on health and WASH services that enable effective and efficient Health &WASH Program and project implementation in the Society in a standardized and consistence manner.
  • Works closely with other relevant work units so as to initiate, develop and assure the implementation of internal & externally funded community-based development like water and environmental sanitation as well as health related projects in consultation with concerned bodies and coordinates its implementation upon approval;   
  • Oversee the site selection, technical specification and development of community based water point sources and piping systems the upon the request of branches and based on national standard;
  • In collaboration with other relevant work units, assigns specialists/technical staff in different health and WASH projects of the Society;
  • Monitors and takes part in internal/joint evaluations of implementation of internal & externally funded health and WASH projects including compliance with partners’ requirements; Provides technical assistance to branches in project management related to health and WASH.
  • Work with the responsible work units to design and administer Health and WASH trainings to staffs & volunteers in a participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation (PHAST) and ELTS approach with the training cascading to the community level to raise awareness on the link between lack of proper hygiene and sanitation and the prevalence of preventable diseases.  
  • supports promotion of disease prevention before, during and after the advent of disaster through different mechanisms such as CBHFA including non-communicable diseases; Supports in Strengthening primary health care which will focus on strengthening health care at household, community and primary health care facility level by working in collaboration with the ministry of health and other relevant sector ministries;
  • Collaborate and take part in nutritional education and promotion, promotion of fortified food items to address micro and macro nutrition deficiencies, kitchen garden; Work with relevant work units to strengthen the capacity of health system to be able to provide quality care;
  • In close collaboration with the concerned work units implement WASH and nutrition intervention focusing on promoting hygiene (focusing on the five hygiene domains) and sanitation following a PHAST and CLTSH + approaches in the community;
  • Provide technical support & assistance to the concerned work units in efforts made to complement the government’s intervention in ensuring access to safe water in constructing and rehabilitating water facilities, strengthening water management committees as well as by promoting household water treatment. 
  • Support identification and scaling up of community based health and care interventions that are evidence based and cost effective using CBHFA, PHAST, BCC, Community Based Nutrition Interventions, and other approaches ; Participates in coordination and task force meetings, and related forums on matters of health and WaSH sector
  • Take part in designing and implementation of promotion of culture of non-violence and peace activities integrating with health and WaSH project of the national society;
  • Provides coaching and mentoring to subordinates and team members on program quality standards, management quality procedures and health and WaSH projects/programs best practices
  • Supervise the development of water supply infrastructures to disaster victims, and rehabilitating damaged water structures (water points) in the aftermaths of disasters, training water committees in operating, maintaining and managing water points sustainably;
  • Ensures timely, efficient, and impactful implementation of health and WaSH projects and closely follow up the deadlines of the same,
  • In coordination with project design and proposal development work unit and partners/stakeholders during the project identification, planning, implementation and monitoring of the project activities to ensure compliance and success of heatlh and WaSH projects
  • Accommodates Psychosocial supports (PSS) in emergency relief assistance to help individuals and communities to heal their psychological wounds and rebuild social structures after an emergency or a critical event;
  • Monitor health and WaSH programs’/projects’ implementation progress and take corrective measures when there is deviation from approved project plans;

Job Requirements

Qualification Requirements:

  • Second or First Degree in public health, environmental science, health service management, health promotion and behavior and
  • 8/10 years relevant experience, out of which 2/4 years in Senior Managerial position/s/.
