INTRODUCTION

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants. The organization has offices across the region, and has been operational in Ethiopia since 2009. With funding from bilateral and multilateral donors, DRC is currently implementing a range of activities across Ethiopia and Djibouti, including WASH and shelter provision, child and youth protection, gender based violence response, awareness-raising of migration risks, protection monitoring of migration routes, and livelihoods support for returning migrants or those at-risk of migration.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Research Manager will be responsible for leading the research component of EMP by implementing a research and learning agenda, assuring that all activities in this agenda are aligned with EMP and client (FCDO) objectives. This position will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world..

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and oversee implementation of EMP’s research and learning agenda
  • Link the research and learning agenda in with the wider EMP MERL framework and with international literature on research methodologies
  • Ensure that the research products are aligned with EMP’s overall objectives and activities. For example, ensuring the research agenda reflects the information that EMP needs in order to achieve better results for its beneficiaries
  • Draft research questions and methodology for suggested research topics and finalise it by working closely with the EMP MERL Lead, programme leadership and relevant team members
  • Work with the programme team to assure that selected topics and research questions will answer the programme needs and to make sure that the methodology is appropriate and conflict sensitive
  • Work with the programme team to turn evidence into action, adapting our programming based on research findings
  • Analyze qualitative data as needed per the research agenda, design KIIs and FGD methodologies for field staff to collect qualitative data when needed
  • Draft succinct and useful research products, ensuring findings and recommendations are linked to up to date evidence
  • Draft the final research outputs and presentations to be ready for submission to the client (FCDO), and presentation to the team, FCDO or other external audiences in line with EMP's learning agenda

Job Requirements

Experience and Technical Competencies: (include years of experience)

  • At least 7 years of experience in designing, conducting and reporting research for donor-funded projects
  • Experience of conducting both quantitative and qualitative social research, including data analysis and reporting. Experience with qualitative and quantitative research software is desirable
  • Bachelors' degree in social sciences or related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven experience producing high quality reports for international donor audiences
  • Team player with the ability to also work independently with minimum supervision
  • Ability to communicate complicated ideas (including research methods) in a clear way to non-specialist audiences within the team
  • Understanding of how to communicate findings widely to specialist and non-specialist audience, to influence uptake of findings/recommendations
  • Experience writing concise research briefings and working with implementation teams to adapt programmes based on those findings
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ethiopia and wider Horn of Africa context, including humanitarian and migration-related issues
  • Experience of working on FCDO-funded projects is desired
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity

Education (include certificates, licenses etc.):

  • Degree in law, social sciences, international development, or other relevant field

Languages: (indicate fluency level)

  • Excellent verbal and written English.
  • Fluency in Amharic
  • Other local languages a plus
