Job Description

We are the BBC’s international charity. We are registered with the Charities and Societies Agency (CSA) of Ethiopia, with registration number 1118. We use the power of media and communication to help reduce poverty around the world. BBC Media Action has been working in Ethiopia since 2001 in the areas of media development, health, migration, resilience, women and youth empowerment, and livelihoods. 

BBC Media Action Ethiopia is recruiting a highly motivated and creative person for the role of Content Producer for Television and digital platforms   The role will contribute to delivering a new youth-focused TV programme. 

Overall Purpose of the Job

Under the direct supervision of a Senior Producer, Amharic, the Producer shall work with other producers and the multimedia team to produce highly creative, informative, and engaging contents for TV and social media d platforms. 

Applicants will be able to demonstrate strong editorial and production skills and have a working knowledge of content production systems for video production and digital/social media. Flexibility is a key part of this role; the Producer will at times take on other roles and duties as directed by a Senior Content Producer Amharic. The role will be based in Addis Ababa, with possibility of travelling to other parts of Ethiopia.

Safeguarding

This role will involve working with media partners and volunteers, as well as with vulnerable youth and adult populations. As such, the role will absolutely require effective working knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures in relation to protection of children and vulnerable adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct. A police background check will form part of the recruitment process. BBC Media Action operates a zero-tolerance policy concerning all forms of abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people.

 Key Responsibilities

  • To generate original ideas for TV and online platforms

  • To ensure contents reflect our audience’s information needs
  • To play a key role in the conceptualization and delivery of content
  • Working with Research and digital media teams to regularly analyze our Social Media pages
  • Deputizing where appropriate for Senior Team Members
  • To display open-mindedness and willingness to collaborate and share ideas with colleagues 
  • To comply with the BBC’s policies and to apply the principles when carrying out the role
  • To comply with all relevant BBC safety rules, procedures, and guidelines, being aware of responsibilities under BBC safety policies 

Note: This list is not exhaustive. The successful candidate may, from time to time, be required to take on other duties as directed by the Senior Content Producer or a senior member of staff.

REPORTS TO: Senior Content Producer, Amharic             

Term of contract: Fixed term for Nine Month

CONTRACT: Local terms and conditions. Only eligible for Ethiopian Nationals or those legally able to work in Ethiopia.  

Job Requirement

Required knowledge and experience:

  • Diploma in Journalism, communication, development studies, digital media, or related field and at least 3-4 years relevant experience in television program production
  • Must have strong record of good editorial judgement and decision-making skills
  • Proven television program production and presentation, preferably in behavior and social change communication/journalism
  • Experience in turning ideas into compelling television program and digital media content is required
  • Experience in creating content for social media and online audiences is required
  • Experience working in the field, especially in rural communities
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills
  • Evidence of imagination and an enthusiasm for generating new ideas, particularly those with the widest possible audience appeal
  • Fluency in written and spoken Amharic is required
  • Functional written and spoken English is required
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages is required
  • Working knowledge of creative applications such as Adobe Creative Cloud or similar software is desired
  • A proven record of creative storytelling for social and behavior change communication purposes will be an advantage
