Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. The organization started its humanitarian work with the opening of its first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. The organization has been providing life-saving provisions such as food, water and health services for a very significant number of children devastated by severe drought and the subsequent famine.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia aspires that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Why we need you?

We are looking for a qualified Safety and Security Advisor, who will responsible in adhering the safety and security policies and protocols. Guiding International Security Policy and Standards for all SOS Children Villages in Ethiopia,advice, support, instruct and trains to all Program Locations on security and safety issues and will work closely with the technical security appointments within the country. In addition, collaborate with external security bodies like the UNDSS and security focal persons within peer organizations.

Your role....

While working with us a Safety and Security Advisor, you will

Report to:  Deputy National Director

In charge of the following

Overall safety and security management 

  • Builds the security team by training and developing the security focal point network across the MA.
  • Protects the organization by delivering strategies, techniques, capacities and security leadership.
  • Possession of the necessary skills, experience and attributes to foster a security culture and maintain the active engagement and respect of peers, technical subordinates, and management.
  • Maintains a strong network of external contacts to enable information access and a deterrence capability.

Mentoring and Coaching

  • Lead, manage and provide capacity building support to employees in safety and security by ensuring clear goals and accountabilities are established and achieved.
  • Monitor procedures are in place at MA level to assure that each new employee –  receives a Security briefing including personal security and reference to the global security policy.
  • Deliver security training courses as required by global training guidance and in accordance with global standards.
  • Monitor compliance related to all safety and security requirements related to staff/visitor/contractors travel and security briefings.

Advisory & Monitoring Services

  • Act as lead and monitor/be consulted/included in all communications from the MA related to safety and security incidents and planning.
  • Make regular visits (or as needed) to all locations to monitor security preparedness and field training. Provide a follow-up report with clear recommendations after each visit.
  • Provide timely, concise and clearly articulated quarterly security management compliance reports to National Management Team & Regional Office Safety and Security Advisor.

Dealing with Problems

  • dealing with diverse demands and pressure from different parts of the organization to often tight policies and procedures: Program locations, Regional Office and International Office as well as key stakeholders.
  • The ability to identify, mitigate and manage safety and security risks.
  • The ability to maintain relationships of mutual trust and respect across the organization

Contingency Planning and Crisis Management

  • Provide security input into developing contingency plan for the MA and PLs.
  • Assist Program Locations to develop and test contingency plans and systems.
  • Ensure Gender and Child Safeguarding are integrated in all Security related programming.

Job Requirements

The must haves:

Education 

  • Security training or any other relevant Bachelors degree

 Experience

  • 2 years of relevant experience within in Humanitarian International Organizations
  • Security skills developed in formal government experience including in the military, police, or a related discipline.

Additional Requirements and required competencies

  • Knowledge and practical work experience, preferably with non-profit or NGO within international humanitarian assistance programs, with proven capabilities in planning, organizing and executing security operations in the field.
  • Knowledge or work experience in post-conflict and/or complex emergency environment

The Pluses:

  • Prior INGO Experience is an asset
