The mission is guided by ECA's five strategic directions which are, advancing ECA's position as a premier knowledge institution that builds on its unique position and privilege to bring global solutions to the continent's problems and take local solutions to the continent; developing macroeconomic and structural policy options to accelerate economic diversification and job creation; designing and implementing innovative financing models for infrastructure, and for human, physical and social assets for a transforming Africa; contributing solutions to regional and transboundary challenges, with a focus on peace security and social inclusion as an important development nexus; advocating Africa's position at the global level and developing regional responses as a contribution to global governance issues.

The Gender, Poverty and Social Policy Division (GPSPD) is headed by a Director who reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme). The Division is responsible for contributing towards achieving inclusive and equitable sustainable human and social development in Africa and promoting and supporting the Member States in their work to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment. It is divided into three main sections: Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment; Social Policy; and Urbanization and Development. The Division supports member States to design, implement and monitor policies and strategies to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment in Africa, and accelerate their implementation of global and regional gender-related commitments for the empowerment of women and girls. It also supports member States in the design and implementation of appropriate national and sub-regional policies, programs, and strategies to eradicate extreme poverty and reduce inequality in order to achieve inclusive and equitable human and social development. Key areas of emphasis include social protection, health, migration, demographic transition, youth, aging, and urbanization. The Division undertakes research and analysis to generate the evidence base for policy design; provides technical advisory support to member States in the design, implementation, and monitoring of policies; and promotes policy dialogue, learning, and exchange in these areas.

This Internship Program is located in the sections of the Gender, Poverty, and Policy Division (GPSPD) of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The intern/s will be working under the overall supervision and guidance of the Director of GPSPD and the direct supervision of the Chiefs of the Sections. The internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Section. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Section to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

The daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with research in support of the preparation of studies, reports, papers, fact sheets, and infographics related to the work of the Division
  • Identify and compile information, statistics, and databases in the areas of policy priority for the Division’s work
  • Assist with organizing and convening meetings, including attending to all relevant preparations
  • Perform other duties as might be assigned by the supervisor

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Program, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants to the program must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
  1. be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second-level university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  2. be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of the first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Applicants who have graduated (as defined in (1) or (2) above), if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications.

Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advanced course work, or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required for this Internship Program
  • Knowledge of French is desirable
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage

All interns assigned to a UN Organization, including Funds and Programs, at an Ethiopia-based duty station, who are not Ethiopian nationals will be required to obtain a business visas or a visa upon arrival authorization letter from the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) prior to traveling to Ethiopia. Prospective interns who are already in Ethiopia in another non-immigrant status may need to apply for a change of status prior to joining the United Nations for an internship.
