We are pleased to announce the following vacancy for Senior Specialist: Privacy Counsel within the Legal & Risk Function in Ethiopia. In keeping with our current business needs, we are looking for a person who meets the criteria indicated below.

Detailed Description

Reporting to Executive Head of Compliance, the role holder will be responsible for Managing and implementing the Safaricom Ethiopia privacy program. The Privacy Counsel will be accountable for POPI compliance within Safari com Ethiopia. The role will deal with day-to-day legal, contractual and regulatory matters involving data privacy and provides strategic advice and guidance including protection and use personal information across various business units.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Providing legal expert advice, counsel and guidance to all business units within Safaricom Ethiopia on global privacy laws, regulations and best practices.
  • Drafting and reviewing data protection agreements and managing the implementation of privacy initiatives, including conducting Privacy Risk Impact Assessments, maintenance of processing records and Security and Privacy by Design and Assurance (SPDA); creating business friendly guidance documents and resources including privacy playbooks.
  • Developing, maintaining and reviewing relevant corporate policies and providing training to ensure compliance with Privacy related laws
  • SPOC for Privacy Office in engaging with senior management to ensure Vodacom adopts consistent and harmonized approaches on the processing of personal information
  •  Responsible for engagement with Information Regulators office and providing reports as may be required by the Information Regulator from time to time
  •  Conduct research and preparing position papers on critical privacy matters affecting Safaricom Ethiopia.

Job Requirements

Qualification 

  • 3-5 years in a Legal or Regulatory environment with sound and balanced legal judgement and business awareness, with an understanding of the need to pragmatically assess risk
  • Extensive experience (3- 5yrs or more) in a regulated industry e.g. Telco, banking, management consulting or any other industry that deals with high risk personal data usage, within a multinational matrix organization
  • Admitted attorney (an advantage)
  • Relevant Legal Degree essential (LLB preferred)
  • 3 -5 years’ experience in dealing with privacy and data protection matters is highly recommended
  • Working knowledge of the Protection of Personal Information) and various privacy legislations in Africa and operationalizing Privacy
  • A Professional Privacy certification (CIPP, CIPT or CIPM) or other privacy certification or qualification is highly recommended will be advantageous
