About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131 District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee and 5871 Kebele Red Cross committees.

ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

Key performance area

Under the supervision of the Manager, Pharmaceuticals Operation, the distribution and sales officer responsible for the following major functional duties

• Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and controls the sales and delivery of good quality, safe, efficacious and affordable medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment to customers of Essential Drugs Program;
• Plans and executes timely market assessment and sales of medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment to meet the demands of customers in a cost effective manner;
• Ensures medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment delivery schedules are according to the needs of customers, receive supplies from the Central Store, and arranges transport and effect delivery to customers as required.
• Arranges and controls the necessary labor staff for handling the sorting, moving, stacking, loading and unloading activities in the course of handling and delivering medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment;
• Makes sure that adequate supply of medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment are available and maintained at the central store at any particular time; Make sure that information are gathered at the stock levels, shortage and expiry situation at central store and report same to superior for action;
• Drives increased revenue to achieve NS’s stretched objectives set in the strategic plan; Initiates price fixing or revision proposals for management decision based on contemporary market and operation cost assessment.
• Regularly monitors market situation, assess price of other related organizations with respect to the services provided by Essential Drugs Program;. Evaluates existing sales conditions, sales possibilities, product and service lines offered and competitor’s strategies to promote sales of product.
• Gathers data on competitors and participates in analyzing their volume of business, methods of operation, service charge strategies and market share to determine the marketing direction and to develop the marketing strategies of Essential Drugs Program;
• Makes sure whether the issue/turn in document is written properly by checking all computations; Regularly liaises with the storekeepers to exchange information on the stock levels of medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment;
• Conducts studies and proposes ideas that help health and pharmaceuticals to reduce delivery cost to the minimum possible level and enhance the efficiency of the sales target; Takes appropriate and timely measures on any claims pertaining to the supply of damaged or spoiled goods and drugs/medical supplies with unacceptable quality and date of expiry;
• Participates in drug selection and quantification committee activities; Ensures establishment of minimum reorder and maximum stock position and controls inventory movement of the Essential Drugs Program;
• Verify and submits monthly stock movement report of the central store and quarterly report on sales, stock movement, expiring items.Initiates purchase requisition for stock items to maintain the minimum stock level; 
• Establishes inventory controlling procedures and standards; devises an information system by which latest data on stock of medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment available at central store could be communicated to customers and periodic consumption could be obtained;
• Monitors and evaluates the applied medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment delivery system and proposes improvements or alternatives which can upgrade delivery efficiency; Ensures that expired, damaged and spoiled drugs and medical supplies are disposed within a reasonably short time and obtains certificate of destruction from the Food, Medicines and Healthcare Administration and Control Authority;
• Monitors market response to medicines, other related supplies and medical equipment supplied by central store with the objective of assessing the opinion of prescribers, dispensers and consumers;

Reports to: Manager, Pharmaceuticals Operation

Terms of employment: permanent after probation period   

Job Requirements

Qualification Requirements

• First Degree in Pharmacy and Diploma in Purchasing/ Management/ Material Management
• 6 Years work experience
