Job Description

Background

Jhpiego is an international, nonprofit health organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. For more than 40 years, Jhpiego has empowered frontline health workers by designing and implementing effective, low-cost, hands-on solutions to strengthen the delivery of health care services for women and their families. By putting evidence-based health innovations into everyday practice, Jhpiego works to break down barriers to high-quality health care for the world’s most vulnerable populations. In Ethiopia, Jhpiego provides technical assistance to the Ministry of Health in the areas of maternal, child and newborn health, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, as well as in health workforce education, management and regulation.

One of the programs being implemented is the Health Workforce Improvement Program (HWIP) which is a five-year USAID funded program (2020 – 2025) implemented by Jhpiego led consortium for improving the health workforce in Ethiopia. The overall goal of the program is to address the critical HRH challenges by optimizing production, performance, & management of health workers across all levels of the health system in the country. Gender disparities exist in the production, retention, and performance of female students and faculty members, as well as in the health workforce compositions. To address these disparities, HWIP is implementing key gender transformative strategies and activities at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Professional Associations (PAs), and health facilities.

In this regard, HWIP plans to recruit four part-time consultants to provide technical expertise and leadership in support of key gender focused activities in the institutions targeted. Three consultants will be supporting the work of three Jhpiego offices in Oromia, SNNP, and Amhara while one will be working with the central team in Addis Ababa.

Objective of the consultancy

The overall purpose of this short-term consultancy is to strengthen the efforts of HWIP project in implementing gender transformative activities and achieving the intended results.

The consultant will be required to undertake the following major activities and these are detailed in the TOR which is attached here.

  1. Lead the conduct of gender assessments and audits
  2. Design mechanisms for and conduct advocacy at different level to strengthen gender mainstreaming and address gender disparities
  3. Conduct capacity building trainings and workshops with targeted institutions as well as HWIP staff
  4. Collaborate with gender offices of targeted institutions and provide the necessary technical support
