LWF World Service Ethiopia is a registered foreign charity which has been operating in Ethiopia since 1973 implementing various development and humanitarian projects in different parts of Ethiopia. LWF World Service Ethiopia works closely with the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY), the Ethiopian Government, UN organizations and other funding partners. Its thematic areas include promotion of food security and sustainable livelihood, sustainable natural resources management, emergency preparedness, response and rehabilitation, and capacity building. LWF World Service Ethiopia invites qualified candidates to apply for the following vacant positions: 

Project/Duty Station: Oromiya Region, Bale Zone, Gololcha.

The Climate Change & DRR Officer is responsible to provide technical support to the project team, target community and partners in the process of planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of climate resilience activities. The technical supports among others, include designing and implementation of methodologies for community based climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. It also includes planning and implementation of appropriate advocacy activities on climate justice in partnership with like-minded organizations, the media and academia. The position holder will lead and facilitate climate risk assessment, baseline survey, and networking with local and regional level stakeholders working in climate change. He/She collects and documents case studies and learnings on climate change initiatives and facilitate replication of new approaches in climate change issues. He/She is expected to work in close coordination and maintain good working relationship with district and zone level government counterpart offices, NGOs, CBOs and other pertinent stakeholders to advance the issues of climate change and resilience building. He/She will initiate and implement capacity building activities in diverse issues of climate change and resilience building. He/She reports to the project coordinator. 

 Main duties and responsibilities of the Position Holder:

  • Lead the planning, implementation and monitoring of the climate change and resilience building interventions,
  • Support implementing partner in the implementation of the community-based climate change adaptation and mitigation activities,
  • Facilitate climate risk assessment, baseline study and mapping od stakeholders in climate change and resilience building,
  • Identify/design IEC/BCC materials and facilitate their use with the community and other stakeholders for awareness raising and mobilization activities on the issues of climate change,
  • Support local level partners such as CBOs to engage men, women and children to promote the issue of climate change and climate justice,
  • Initiate and work with networks on climate change and resilience building issues to advance the issue of climate change,
  • Facilitate capacity building initiatives to improve understanding among the target community and local level actors on climate change and disaster risk reduction for collective positive actions,
  • Work closely with local level government bodies, CBOs, NGOs and other stakeholders for common goal of resilience building among the target community,
  • Collect, analyze, document and share learnings and best practices in the areas of climate change, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience building,
  • Prepare quarterly, semiannual and annual performance reports for the activities under his/her responsibility,
  • Follow procedure as outlined in LWF’s policies, staff rules, and other operation manuals,
  • Perform any other duties as assigned to him by the project coordinator or his designate.

Job Requirements

Required Qualification and Work Experience:  

  • Master's or Bachelor's Degree in Climate Change, Disaster Risk Management and other related fields. Minimum of 3 years relevant experience for Bachelor degree and 1 years for Master’s Degree.

Key competencies:

  • Knowledge of Afan Oromo is mandatory
  • Strong communication skill in English (written and oral)
  • Ability to interact with people
  • Experience in areas of Climate Change, DRR and Livelihoods
  • Interested to work under pressure and in harsh environment
  • Previous related experience in NGO setup is an advantage
