Job Description

ISS Addis Ababa: Researcher, Training for Peace

The ISS is seeking a researcher to join its Training for Peace (TfP) team in Addis Ababa. The researcher will manage projects, coordinate stakeholder relationships, conduct research and support TfP’s training engagements. The researcher will report to the TfP Project Manager.

Training for Peace (TfP) is a capacity support programme to the African Union Commission (AUC) funded by the Government of Norway. TfP strives to strengthen the capacity of the AUC to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts and insecurity on the continent through the effective deployment of a full spectrum peace support operations.

Overview of duties

  • Conduct policy research and analysis on human security issues
  • Disseminate research findings through appropriate ISS formats
  • Help meet TfP’s training and capacity building objectives, including developing training packages, conducting and facilitating training courses, and compiling data for quality control, monitoring and evaluation
  • Provide support for project monitoring and evaluation
  • Assist with administrative and logistical tasks, including event coordination, budgets, meetings and ISS administration
  • Network and liaise with stakeholders to build ISS’ profile, shape decision making and ensure engagement with research results

The contract will be until 31 December 2022, renewable commensurate with confirmed project funding/renewal of the next phase of TfP. A competitive salary is offered.

Job Requirements

Overview of requirements

  •  A minimum of a Master’s degree in social sciences, political science, international relations or a related field
  • At least five years’ relevant work experience relating to the African Peace and Security Architecture, preferably with a focus on gender, peace operations and peacebuilding by the AU and the RECs/RMs
  • Experience and skills in developing training materials and supporting, delivering and facilitating training
  • Track record of relevant single-authored publications, media commentary and public speaking at international forums
  • Strong networking, interpersonal and communication skills, in particular the ability to work with the AU, RECs/RMs, governments and civil society
  • Understanding and experience in monitoring and evaluation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; strong skills in written and verbal French will be an advantage
  • Ability to travel extensively
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
