Job Description

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

 Mercy Corps has been operating in Ethiopia since 2004, working in rural, peri-urban and urban areas in five regional states - Somali, Oromia, Afar, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples, Amhara - and the capital city of Addis Ababa. We engage in both development and humanitarian work, and seek to integrate approaches, programs and geographies as much as possible. Our partners include government, academic institutions, development and private sector actors, civil societies and communities.

 Mercy Corps Ethiopia is demonstrating a sustained commitment to agency Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) and Gender, Diversity and Inclusion efforts. Accordingly, the country office is selected as one of the two Mercy Corps pilot countries to implement the recently launched a new three-year agency wide Gender Equality, Diversity and Social inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy . The strategy is unique in that it represents a joint effort between the GESI (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion) and GDI (Gender, Diversity, and Inclusion) teams. The strategy reflects the important link between internal GDI promotion and Mercy Corps’ goal of achieving programmatic impact at the community level. Therefore, Mercy Corps Ethiopia is looking to hire a national volunteer to support the country GEDSI effort as part of the pilot and regular GEDSI  implementation.

 LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 The volunteer at the end of the program will acquire important skill and knowledge on leading mentorship and internship programs, and leading Gender, GBV and protection related assessments and implementing program activities related to GBV, Gender and protection.

 Volunteer’s RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate and support the country junior staff mentorship and internship of new graduates’ programs
  • Engage in implementation of protection and GBV related programmatic activities including psychosocial support related services
  • Engage in GESI analysis, GBV rapid assessment and protection analysis processes
  • Perform any other duties as shall be assigned by the supervisor.

Mercy Corps responsibilities

For the duration of this 6 months assignment the Volunteer will receive:

  • Stipend
  • Ground transport in country
  • Workstation within Mercy Corps Ethiopia office in the head office (Addis Ababa)
  • Access to Mercy Corps online tool

Volunteer responsibilities

Volunteer will remain responsible for all costs associated with:

  • Medical insurance
  • Living expenses
  • All other costs associated with this Volunteer work

 WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a head office (Addis Ababa) based position with frequent travels to field locations

 Mercy Corps volunteer represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and Mercy Corps’ policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues

Job Requirements

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA degree in gender, psychology, social work, sociology, or another relevant field.
  • Two years and more similar responsibilities such as psychosocial support, promoting gender equality, coaching and mentorship related responsibilities and so on
  • Previous experience in volunteer service provision is an advantage
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (at least Basic knowledge of Excel)
  • Managing resources – Organizes and manages information in an optimum manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills – able to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative.
  • Fluency in English required
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to both lead and follow as appropriate.
  • This opportunity is only Ethiopian nationals
