Amref Health Africa in Ethiopia
Amref Health Africa (Amref) has been active in Ethiopia through Amref Flying Doctors since the 1960s. Our organization started implementing a diversified health projects portfolio focusing on Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Communicable and Non-communicable diseases in collaboration with the Government of Ethiopia, international non-government organization and local stakeholders since 2002. Gender and health systems strengthening are cross-cutting, reflected throughout the organization’s health programming.
.Background Information
Ethiopia has the highest-burden and prevalence of active trachoma globally (50% of the sub-Saharan Africa trachoma burden is estimated to occur in Ethiopia). The disease remains a major health problem and a leading cause of infectious blindness in Ethiopia
WHO recommended SAFE (Surgery for Trichiasis, Antibiotic administration, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvement) strategy for the prevention of trachoma , currently “S” and “A” components are progressing well. However, the “F” and “E” components were not achieved as expected, which makes the overall coverage of the trachoma elimination program low. Without strong “F” & “E” intervention it will be difficult to achieve a blinding trachoma elimination target. However, the focus of the national trachoma elimination program is now shifting towards Strengthening Capacity to Promote Behavior Change Support of NTD Elimination and Control interventions.
Trachoma prevalence surveys conducted as part of the Global Trachoma Mapping Program (GTMP) in Afar in 2013 indicated an average prevalence of TT in those aged 15 years or older of 0.56%, and a prevalence of active trachoma in children ranging from 2.9% to 16.3%. Based on these data, 23 of the 31 districts in Afar are endemic for trachoma.
The trachoma mapping also conducted Somali region in 2013/14 with the support of GTMP, identified prevalence of active trachoma range between 1.16% to 37.7 % and Trichiasis prevalence rate of 0.56%, with 4,711,591 people requiring MDA and 11,591 people requiring Trichiasis surgery. Around 58 woredas require support for SAFE strategy interventions were identified.
Amref Health Africa in collaboration with Sightsavers, strengthening capacity to promote behavior change support of Neglected tropical diseases (NTD) elimination and control programs in Afar and Somali regions.
One of the main objective of this initiative is to sustain the supply of sanitation product through sanitation marketing with focus on strengthening supply chain of hygiene products through establishing social enterprises. The sanitation marketing initiative is an important and effective intervention for improving the supply side of hygiene products in the regions and engaging women in micro businesses. The initiative identifies two products, a lotion and liquid soap. The liquid soap to be produced and sold by young women/men in the community who lead microbusinesses. The lotion is to be produced centrally and distribute To this effect, Amref seeks to obtain the services of competent and highly experienced consultant or firm that will provide training on how to produce liquid soap and can produce centrally and avail face/body lotion for distribution for local entrepreneurs in targeted woredas of Afar and Somali regions.
The main purpose of this consultancy is to produce face lotion and train local entrepreneur to produce liquid soap for hand and face washing.
