Green Innovation Center (GIC)
The project “Green Innovation Centers for the Agriculture and Food Sector” is a global project implemented in 15 countries. It is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German government. The country package in Ethiopia focuses on the wheat, legumes and honey chains in Oromia and Amhara Regions. It is being implemented since 2015 and runs until 03/2026. Target groups are smallholder farmers/beekeepers as well as micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) along the three value chains. The project partner is the Ethiopian federal Ministry of Agriculture, including the agricultural offices in the project regions.
Contract duration: Until March 31, 2026
Responsibilities
The Agriculture Advisor is responsible for
- Development and continuous reflection of the honey value chain strategy
- Coordination with the other two value chain strategies wheat and legumes and respective advisors of the project who are responsible for the two other value chains
- Coordination of the honey value chain strategy operationalization and implementation in the project regions
- Knowledge management and networking with other GIZ projects as well as external partners, especially on honey value chain
Tasks
The Agriculture Advisor performs the following tasks:
Professional Advisory
- Monitors the development and implementation of project plans and activities by the project teams as well as external implementation partners
- Develops and organizes quality assurance measures and suggests necessary changes, improvements and initiatives for the project steering.
- Identifies bottlenecks and recommends alternative management options to the component leader and project manager.
- Supports in identifying needs for external support and advice and works on policy recommendations
- Advises partner institutions, supports them to prepare concepts and strategies and provides technical inputs
- Designs, prepares, and implements workshops, seminars and other events
- Presents and represents the project in internal and external events as required
- Initiates and follows up on finance-administrative processes, including procurement of goods and services with the relevant GIZ units
Networking and cooperation
- Ensures cooperation, regular contact and dialogue with partners
- Cooperates with relevant public, private and civil society actors such as local communities, governmental- and non-governmental organizations as well as with other German cooperation projects
- Communicates interests and efforts, forwards these and encourages sharing of ideas and information among any relevant stakeholders
- Travels (domestically and internationally), in accordance with project requirements
Knowledge management
- Compile’s information and documents lessons learned from project activities and external data / experiences
- Develops ready-to-use strategies and technical concepts, guidelines, training materials, manuals and procedures.
- Draws up reports and presentation documents.
- Delivers input for various project/programme reports including annual reports required by GIZ, BMZ, Ethiopian government and other project partners.
- Assists with research activities and studies on political issues which benefit joint programmes
Other duties/additional tasks
- performs other duties and tasks at the request of management
Job Requirements
Qualifications
- MSc or PHD in an area of apiculture, agriculture or a field relevant to the position
Professional experience
- 7 years’ professional experience
- At least 3 years’ professional experience in a comparable position
- A proven track record in agricultural research is an advantage
- Experience working with international organizations is an advantage
- Experiences working in the hone value chain
Other knowledge, additional competencies
- Excellent analytical skill and strategic thinking
- Independent self-starter with attention to detail
- Problem-solving attitude
- Very good communication skills
- Ability to organize workload, adapt quickly to change, and deliver under the pressure of deadlines.
- Good working knowledge of ICT technologies and computer applications (especially MS Office)
- Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management
- Proficiency in English and Amharic (both written and oral), Oromiffa is of advantage
- Strong interpersonal skills
