Education forms the foundation of an equal society, and FRC´s activities in Ethiopia place emphasis on capacity building for the most vulnerable members of societies and supports their active participation in communities, thus strengthening basic democratic structures. At the core of FRC’s work is inclusion of vulnerable groups and therefore, special emphasis is placed on the protection of persons with disabilities, women and youth in all activities.
FRC has been registered in Ethiopia and accorded legal personality with Registry Number 4184 on 11th of June 2019 as a Foreign Organization.
Purpose of the Position
The key purpose of the Education Specialist role is to lead the implementation of FRC Functional Adult Education (FAL) strategy and make it stronger by providing technical advice to the FRC Senior Management Team (SMT) on best Adult Education practices and developments nationally, as well as guide and support the field teams in implementation of FRC Functional Adult Education projects (literacy, numeracy, reading writing, writing, livelihoods related trainings) and ensure quality of the on-going and upcoming interventions throughout the entire project cycles.
The Education Specialist will also establish networks and represent FRC in relevant education forums and clusters and report back to Program Manager and SMT. They will also work together with the other technical specialists in FRC and provide their technical advice in support of the overall interventions and approaches. The Education Specialists will support the development and lead on education related aspects and any needs assessments to define the best approaches in FRC programming.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
60% Education Programmatic support
The Education Specialist will
- Lead in Adult Education curriculum development in different thematic areas within the socio-cultural context of target learners and regional & federal level Adult Education framework,
- Ensure quality implementation Adult Teaching Methodologies/Andragogy in all programming,
- Provide technical support to field technical FRC staff, stakeholders, and partners on adult education and community and institutional capacity building,
- Collaborate with and technically support programs and other departments and staff (including Finance and Admin) to ensure the success of FRC’s adult education approach,
- Provide staff capacity building throughout the organisation, in staff meetings and curriculum development activities, also developing an internal online database for staff capacity development and support,
- Plan, organize and supervise the activities and give technical guidance to the field team to ensure quality courses for the learners,
- Prepare and provide inputs to reports on projects and other activities on monthly, quarterly and annually, and when the need arises,
- Support programs and SMT on annual and project specific budgeting and provide inputs for continuous reviews of expenditure and financial forecasting,
- Work together with the M&E Specialist and other Programs Team to develop a feasible and comprehensive M&E plan,
- In cooperation with relevant Federal and Regional government education bureaus, fine tune and quality check the curricula, and design training materials,
30% Coordination and Networks
- Represent FRC and actively participate in all relevant national level education clusters/working groups and networks, reporting back to SMT on the needs and focus areas,
- Closely collaborate with the Country Office technical team (MEAL, Protection, Livelihoods, humanitarian coordinator etc.) for successful integrated program design and implementation,
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with UNHCR, RRS and key national partners and national and international NGOs working with themes of forced migration,
- Attend meetings with project partners and ensure effective project and program implementation,
- Network and develop partnerships with likeminded organizations/government bodies for overall operational success in line with organizational goals and strategy
10% Reporting
- Produce periodic reports to education project with FRC’s standard and guidance
- Review reports produced by Field Teams and give inputs to ensure FRC standard reporting,
- Gather information and develop case stories, success stories relevant to the projects and programs
- Other tasks as assigned by the line manager
Duration: One year contract with possible extension
Location: Addis Ababa with regular travel to operational areas

Professional Standards:
FRC staff must adhere to the values and principles outlined in the FRC Code of Conduct.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in adult education, education and pedagogical science, or related field of studies.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 8 years of relevant work experience, out of which at least 2 years with technical leadership responsibility to areas of adult education and community trainings
COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge and practical experience of Adult Education and the different and relevant tiers of the education sector
- Good communication skills, takes initiative to identify areas for improvement in programming and brings their ideas to the front,
- Familiarity with humanitarian principles;
- Previous experience with International NGOs;
- Goal oriented, demonstrates abilities to supervise staff;
- Good communication and writing skills, is adaptable, flexible and resourceful, able to adopt an organized and methodological approach, confident in carrying out tasks with minimal supervision
- Fluent written and spoken English language skills;
- Strong interpersonal and advocacy skills;
- Good team spirit and respect for diversity;
- Proficiency is Microsoft Office package.
DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES
- Experience in producing training materials and deliver training independently,
- Experience in curriculum review, development,
- Partnership management experience
- Previous experiences in functional adult literacy and disability inclusive education program leadership
