Job Title: GIS Specialist and Database Manager

Duty Station: Office (Addis Ababa) / Field-based (Kenticha)

Position Description

Kenticha Mining PLC (KMplc) is an exploration and mining company headquartered in Ethiopia with operations in the south of the country. The company is looking for dynamic, self-motivated and experienced geology and related practitioners to join a growing team of exploration professionals. Candidates must be Ethiopian citizens or hold a valid Ethiopian work permit. Reporting to the Exploration Manager, the GIS Specialist and Database Manager will be responsible for implementing, running, and maintaining the company’s geological database, along with GIS activities in relation to geological programs across the company’s tenement areas. The incumbent will be an experienced exploration professional with a strong technical and database management background.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Management of the company’s technical database.
  • Responsible for all technical data capture as far as the database is concerned.
  • Responsible for the generation of database queries and reports as required by technical staff.
  • Management of GIS-related data, and the production of fair copy GIS mapping products.
  • Monitoring of company QAQC protocol implementation and producing monthly QAQC assay reports.
  • Assistance with the preparation of internal and external reports as per the company’s reporting cycles.
  • Monitoring geological staff w.r.t. geological/sample data capture, data storage and database development.
  • Ensuring data quality and integrity.
  • Ensuring data backups are done regularly to industry standards.
  • Ensuring compliance with respect to company standard operating procedures.
  • Recommending appropriate database platforms, overseeing database migration exercises. 

Working Schedule: 50/50, 5.5-day workweek

Job Requirements

As a minimum, the prospective candidate must have/be:

  • A B.Sc. degree in Earth Sciences, Geographic Information or Database Management from a reputable tertiary institution.
  • Eight to 10 years of relevant geological database experience using a variety of platforms (e.g., Access, Datashed).
  • Six to eight years of hands-on GIS experience, detailed knowledge of GIS software packages (ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro), extensive geological map-making experience.
  • Competent in the design, implementation and management of mineral exploration database systems, analysis of geological data, QAQC data, and evaluation of QAQC results.
  • Experience in satellite imagery interpretation would be considered an asset.
  • Well versed in the requirements of industry reporting codes such as JORC.
  • The ability to work under minimal supervision, and in remote locations when required.
  • English language proficiency and excellent report writing skills.
  • A valid driving license.
