Job Title: Assistant Project Officer

Background

The Hunger Project – Ethiopia (THP-E) is implementing projects in rural areas of Ethiopia since 2004 and currently THP-E would like to hire Assistant Project officer who will provide extension support to the project titled “A flourishing future of the Gewocha forest” based on the summary of requirements for the position described below.

Job Summary

  • Under the supervision of the Project Manager and thematic officers, the Assistant Project Officer will provide extension services on:
  • Regeneration of forested lands, restoration of degraded communal lands and management of forested & restored sites and forest resources. Conduct inventory of the type, amount, and location of standing trees, mobilize community and implement measures to conserve biodiversity, water quality, and soil stability, and ensure compliance with forest and environmental regulations;
  • Mobilize, train and mentor the community and implement plans for planting and growing new trees, monitor trees for healthy growth. She/he train and mentor farmers on sustainable natural resource management including participatory forest management plan formulation and implementation on community owned forest and restoration lands;
  • Agroforestry practices and WASH services. You will be providing overall technical, organizational support and play mobilization and facilitation role on technology and best practices promotion, awareness creation;
  • Improved cattle breeding, management and related services mostly in the outdoor setting. S/he will provide technical support and plays mobilization and facilitation role in communities she/he is assigned, including breed and feed technology, cattle management best practices, awareness creation and behavioral change through education, information and communication;
  • Food security, rural livelihoods and WASH services improvement of target smallholders through rural business development and promotion of producers and saving and credit cooperatives and WASH services. The officer provides overall technical, organizational support and plays facilitation role in communities she/he is assigned including: behavioral change through education, information and communication, organizing and mentoring women Self Help Groups, leadership trainings and market linkages.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum of College Diploma in agricultural extension, forestry, livestock, cooperatives management or related fields

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum three years’ work experience in forestry, rural livelihood program in similar contexts or related fields of study;
  • Firm belief in teamwork, gender equality, conceptual understanding of participatory approach and sustainable development;
  • Familiarity in participatory extension approach/PLA tools; 
  • Ability to establish open relationship with the community, government counterparts and CBOs in order to facilitate and encourage active participation in overall development activities and internally, with Supervisors and other concerned staff;
  • Ability and commitment to live among the rural community, travels long distances on foot and stand during training sessions;
  • Demonstrated skills in partnership building and interpersonal communication;
  • Knowledge of the working area, local language and reporting writing skills;
  • Skills in Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and emails 
  • Commitment to THP-E mission, values and policy.
