The position holder reports to the Project Coordinator in Mekelle and shall be responsible for the overall planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of community based psychosocial support (CBPS)- related activities under the nexus project entitled: “Protection, WASH and Shelter for IDPs and Returnees in Tigray, Ethiopia’’ including psychosocial support to traumatized people and vulnerable groups, awareness creation and capacity building on CBPS issues, counselling and psychosocial first aid, and monitoring and ensuring social services are provided to affected groups.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Identify connectors and dividers among community groups and the entire operation areas to design strategies of strengthening the connectors and coping with the dividers;
  • Identify capacities and resources available among the affected communities to build on for sustainable and feasible solutions;
  • Ensure provision of psychosocial support including psychosocial first aid with referrals to services for conflict survivors;
  • Provide psychosocial support aimed at helping affected people to overcome from traumatic experiences;
  • Counsel and encourage affected families and individual to assume productive life;
  • Plan, facilitate and integrate recreational and educational activities along with the psychosocial support activities;
  • Plan and implement interventions aimed at ensuring peaceful co-existence between the IDPs and host communities;
  • Plan and deliver awareness creation and training on CBPS issues to the target groups and partners
  • Together with the project staff, contribute to the establishment of documents related to support provided to the families of missing individuals;
  • Ensures confidentiality of management of the information; 
  • Provide professional and confidential services to the affected through survivor-centered case management approach;
  • Play a key role in the affected community case management system;
  • Manage and coordinate all psychosocial wellbeing of refugees in the IDP camps where LWF is operational;
  • Prepare all relevant reports regarding the psychosocial and community service activities and attend/share the same at coordination meetings;
  • Participate in the relevant coordination meetings at woreda, zone and region levels;
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders, including IDP/IDP returnee community members and leaders, Government, UN agencies, local institutions and NGOs to enhance multi-agency and multi-sectoral cooperation and coordination;
  • Closely supervise and follow up the day-to-day activities of the project in accordance with the project document;
  • Follow procedure as outlined in LWF Staff Rules, Collective Agreement and other Operation Manuals;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to him/her by the Project Coordinator;
  • This job description is subject to amendment by the employer when deemed necessary;

Job Requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

  • BA or MA degree and above in social work, psychology, social studies, development studies or other related field of study. At least 3 years relevant experience in humanitarian sector for MA degree and 5 years for BA degree holder.

Skills Required, Attitudes and Attributes:

  • Experience of working in a leadership position within a team structure;
  • Proven skills in managing staff reporting to her/him; excellent coordination skills;
  • Fluent written and spoken English; Knowledge of Tigrigna is mandatory
  • Gender sensitivity;
  • Proven program & project cycle management skills - proposal and report writing skills; monitoring and evaluation skills and experience;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge and experience of emergency and development issues; nexus programming and deep understanding of causes of emergencies, emergency programming and links with policy;
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize well and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to travel extensively, especially to remote areas;
  • Experience in and the ability to train, coach, mentor people.

Additional requirements

  • Prior experience with Global Affairs Canada funding and Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy;
  • Strong cultural awareness and sensitivity;
  • Good skills in planning, monitoring and reporting;
  • Strong organizational and logistical skills;
  • Goal-oriented with ability to work under pressure, independently and with limited supervision;
  • Ability and willingness to work and live in challenging conditions;
