Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.

AHRI would like to hire qualified candidate in the position of Senior Scientist.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leading Bacteriology research
  • Conducts aseptic collection of clinical specimens
  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises the operation of a laboratory performing bacteriological analysis of clinical samples
  • Conduct research on the structure, function, ecology, biotechnology and genetics of bacteria
  • Isolate suspected active bacterial organisms using classical and advanced methods
  • Conduct research on bacterial pathogenesis and related virulence factors
  • Conduct research on understanding mechanisms of antibiotics resistance
  • Employ biotechnology or collaborate with biotechnologist in using cells for researching treatment of bacterial diseases

Job Requirements

Education, Experience & Publication Point:

  • PhD in Microbiology or Bacteriology; and 8 years of experience; and 25 publication points

Specialized Skills:

  • Conventional and automated culture for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
  • Maintain and purify bacteria
  • Basic immunological and molecular biology tests (ELISA, DNA and RNA purification, PCR, qPCR and Plasmid amplification) and procedures to detect, identify and characterize bacteria
