About the Country Program in Ethiopia

Action Against Hunger currently operates in 5 different regions (Oromia, Somali, Amhara, Benishangul Gumuz, and Gambella) with a portfolio of 20m USD/year of emergency, resilience building, research, and innovation programs. We have a country team of around 600 staff in 17 regional and satellite offices. Our main donors in Ethiopia in 2020/2021 are: BHA, ECHO, Europaid, UNHCR, UNICEF, GFFO, BPRM, SIDA, EHF, WFP, CIAA, and other

I. Job Summary

Action Against Hunger is seeking a Nutrition and Health Intern who will based in Addis Ababa. S/he will be responsible for executing specific administrative and sectoral duties assigned by his/her supervisor. The intern will primarily work under the direct supervision of the Nutrition and Health Experts based in Capital. S/he will learn about action against hunger’s nutrition and health program management cycle and approach. The nutrition and health intern will be based in Addis Ababa, with possibility of traveling to the field to implement, support and learn sectoral interventions as well as operational contexts. 

Purpose:

The Nutrition and Health Intern position is part of the wider Action Against Hunger internship program policy and implementation exercise that promote and offer recent nutrition and health graduates a meaningful work experience that would enhance their knowledge, skills, attitudes and employability. By so doing, Action Against Hunger-Ethiopia also gains from the introduction of fresh talent and new perspective to a specific sector projects or team.

Engagement:

The intern will engage with nutrition and health experts based in capital and field levels. Moreover, s/he is likely to work closely and interact with other departments in Action Against Hunger. Depending on the specific tasks assigned by her or his supervisors.

Essential Job duties:

The intern is expected to execute and delivery the following activities: 

  • Support the nutrition and health experts in collecting, organizing, filing or documenting regular nutrition and health program data and reports.
  • Assist in organizing and booking nutrition and health program related meetings, workshops and trainings.
  • Assist and participate in reviewing program based success stories and lessons.
  • Participate in nutrition and health sectoral trainings in consultation with his/her supervisor. 
  • Assist in the timely submission of APRs, sectoral and cluster based regular updates and reports from field.
  • Demonstrate progressive learning and engage in continuous self-development path under the direct supervision of his/her supervisor.
  • S/he is required to undergo a final evaluation to graduate successfully.
  • Undertake any relevant duties and tasks assigned by his/her supervisor.

  • The intern will not have a supervisory role and responsibility.

III.  Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the intern is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with interruptions.

 IV.    Working Conditions, Travel and Environment 

  • The duties of the position require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Could be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required.
  • The intern will receive a computer to work on it and it shall be managed as per the organization’s IT policy.
  • The intern will make travel to various bases (field offices) as required and in consultation with his/her line manager. Hence, s/he must attest to a level of physical fitness capable of enduring physically difficult, highly stressful situations that may include the necessity to walk long distances, to eat a limited diet and/or to reside in potentially uncomfortable housing or tents.
  • While visiting the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well is to infectious diseases.

Job Requirements

I.     Required Qualifications

  • Graduate degree or diploma in Nutrition, Nursing, Public Health and any medical field of study from recognized university or have graduated within the past two years.
  • Graduates with strong interest and some work experience in the nutrition and health space is a plus.
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Must be above 18 years of age.
  • Interns must have no medical limitations which would affect their serving in the function(s) expected from the program. They must confirm that they fit to work, as confirmed by a medical practitioner.

II.    Required Skills & Experience 

  • Zero years of professional experience in the field of nutrition, health and related field of study. Some degree of exposure and experience in similar sector program implementation is encouraging,
  • Experienced in organizing and participating in field-level data collection as part of a research study or program monitoring and evaluation
  • Trained and sensitized on the current national nutrition and health policies and strategies is advantageous.
  • Knowledge and skill of MS Office Suite is mandatory.
  • Fluency (written and Spoken) in English is required. Amharic and any other local languages desirable.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize multiple tasks as well as self-direct with minimum supervision.
  • Genuine interest in and commitment to the opportunity, the mission and principles of Action Against Hunger.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
