Position summary:

The Water Quality Assistant reports to the WASH engineer and is responsible for ensuring the supply of chlorinated & chemically treated water to refugees and the host community in Kebribeya refugee Camp. 

 Primary responsibilities include conducting daily turbidity and residual chlorine test at water storage tanks and water distribution points, setting up of water quality data management system (data collection, entry, analysis, reporting); and conducting regular biological & chemical treatment of the water supply system as required. The Water quality Assistant position also requires proper management of equipment, consumables, and other resources under his respected camp and reporting periodically to the WASH/ Senior electromechanical officer & will be responsible for taking samples, from current water wells and treatment plants, the WQA is responsible for preparing and developing the technical advice for setting up, operating and maintenance of water treatment that will also include chlorination and testing and disinfecting methods of containers of drinking water. He/she is also expected to know and manage the required supplies for the process of water treatment and set technical specifications for all activities related to purification of drinking water and will prepare the required technical steps/documents for domestic and at source water treatments.

RESPONSIBILITY

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure the daily preparation of chlorine stock solution with the demanded concentration at the water treatment plant.
  • Collects raw and potable water samples using sampling protocols for bacteriological, organic, and chemical testing using portable lab equipment and standard sampling methods to determine compliance with federal and UNHCR regulations
  • test water samples for chlorine, conductivity, temperature, Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC), Synthetic Organic Chemicals (SOC), inorganics, and other analyses as required.
  • Monitors and records drinking water parameters using field equipment such as chlorine, pH, conductivity, turbidity, and other analyses as directed.
  • Performs and records routine calibrations and maintenance of field equipment and recognizes correct data & Notifies supervisor and operational staff of unusual field results.
  • Ensure regular cleaning of clear water reservoirs
  • Ensure the cleaning of the analysis room, apparatuses, and materials.
  • Prepares annual & monthly plans for the water quality activities
  • Recognize the available & required apparatuses, reagents, and chemicals timely & request timely.
  • Perform Other activities as directed by his supervisor.
  • Report all the water quality activities to the WASH/ Senior electromechanical officer on a weekly base
  • Prepare and maintain water quality reports.
  • Provide the Wash Engineer with monthly water quality results, alerting the staff of extremely poor water quality tests immediately.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Qualification in Sanitary/ Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health, Applied Chemistry, Applied Biology, or any other relevant field.
  • Experience 3 years of relevant experience with the first degree or 2 years of relevant experience plus postgraduate. NGO experience is a plus. Previous experience in managing/monitoring town water supply particularly in surface water treatment and quality monitoring activities.
  • Basic supervisory/managerial skills.
  • Technical and report writing skills
  • Computer literate.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
