We are pleased to announce the following vacancy for Environmental , Social and Governance Manager within the Compliance Function in Ethiopia. In keeping with our current business needs, we are looking for a person who meets the criteria indicated below.
Detailed Description
Reporting to the EHOD Compliance, the role holder will be responsible for creating and maintaining policies, related environmental, social and integrity risk management tools (systems and controls), developing training programs, and driving value additionally initiatives across Safaricom Ethiopia.
The individual will be a key point of contact on ESG matters and will be responsible for ensuring that they provide adequate support to ensure adherence to E&S reporting requirements.
Job Responsibilities
Assist with the development and implementation of a robust ESG risk management Systems, with business integrity, environmental and social (E&S) considerations at its core, to ensure platform commitment to ethical conduct, adherence to relevant local and international regulatory requirements and alignment with best practice.
Facilitate and assist with the development of an overarching Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) to identify and manage E&S performance related to operations of the company , in line with good international industry practices including IFC Performance Standards, World Bank Group EHS guidelines, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, ILO Core Conventions.
Work closely with related companies at a Holding and subsidiary level to ensure policies and procedures are adequately and effectively aligned and implemented
Assist with the development of a clear procedure for identifying, assessing and managing ESG risks and impacts specifically linked to Safaricom operations in Ethiopia. The procedure should cover all parts of the business and focus on ESG topics including but not limited to:
Occupational health and safety
Stakeholder engagement
Supply chain management and monitoring
Legal and regulatory compliance
Bribery and corruption, including in obtaining approvals, land allocation, procurement and import of goods and equipment, provision of services, client retention, and interactions with local government and regulators
Ensure that training is provided at all levels related to human rights, ethics, compliance, environment, health and safety, labour and other social topics
Develop and report on metrics and risk indicators for material topics, and other regular requirements of the company including reporting according to international sustainability reporting standards (such as GRI).
Formulate, manage and oversee the E&S due diligence and third-party risk assessment processes for all potential acquisitions (including land acquisitions), contractors and suppliers
In collaboration with the Executive Head of Compliance lead the creation and maintenance of a strong ESG and compliance risk management culture across all functions of the business
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on ESG, and Business integrity risk issues as required
Provide technical ESG support to ensure that risk management and value-add is embedded into all decision-making processes
Ensure that relevant records and registers, such as EHS accidents & incidents registers, gifts and hospitality , conflict of interest registers, procurement registers, and delegated and signing authorities are maintained
Support in the implementation of value-add initiatives (e.g. energy efficiency initiatives, process improvements, natural resources management, gender etc.)
Job Requirements
The individual for this role will need to be passionate about sustainable development in an African context, and ideally hold relevant qualifications and/or certifications (Postgraduate -level qualifications from reputable institutions preferred).
5 – 7 years of ESG/Sustainability/ in Africa, preferably in Ethiopia
Experience developing and implementing sustainability programmes in the telecommunications sector
Experience in the international telecommunications sector and strong knowledge of, and ability to provide guidance on, telecommunications/ITC sector ethics, compliance risks, ESG and Human Rights
Experience in developing and implementing Environmental, Health and Safety and Social Management Systems in accordance with international standards (IFC Performance Standards and WBG EHS Guidelines, ISO 14000, 45000, 50001 Standards, SA8000 Social Accountability Standard, among other best practice) and strong understanding of requirements under local Ethiopian regulations
Strong commitment to integrity, sustainability, ethics and good governance and be able to demonstrate leadership and drive in promoting E&S, integrity and corporate governance performance
Self-starter and motivated individual with a pro-active attitude, willing to get involved in all aspects of a new business with a clear mission
Effective management skills, strong attention to detail, organizational skills and the ability to make well-reasoned, independent and transparent decisions within short timeframes
Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build strong relationships and communicate clearly and effectively at different levels and across functions (both internally and externally)
Capable of dealing with board, senior management, shareholders, staff and third parties with confidence, independence and authority.
Able to handle sensitive and confidential matters with tact and discretion.
Familiarity with FCPA and UKBA anti-bribery and corruption guidance specific to the ITC sector
Experience in managing a team and in complying with reporting requirements from investors will be an advantage
