Background:

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI, https://ahri.gov.et) established in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations as a leprosy research institute made a breakthrough contribution to understanding the immunology and eventually improved treatment (MDT) that changed the global landscape of leprosy epidemiology. Re-organized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 376/2016 as biomedical research, clinical trial, and biomedical research capacity building arm of the Federal Ministry of Health. The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading center for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Addis Ababa University, the institute of public health is renowned for its research and capacity building. These three institutions are working in partnership on the Skin Health Africa Research Programme (SHARP, https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/research/centresprojects-groups/sharp#research). SHARP is a multidisciplinary research program funded by the United Kingdom National Institute for Health Research with the aim to identify strategies for improving experiences of “severe stigmatizing skin diseases”. One of the study sites was found in South Wollo, Amhara region. The study will be conducted at The Aim of this observational cohort study of CL patients with all forms of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis undergoing treatment to produce valid treatment outcome measures which can inform the design of later clinical trials.

Thus, AHRI is seeking to appoint one research assistant for the CL cohort study coordination and data collection for research in skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) in Ethiopia at Boru Meda General Hospital, Amhara region. The research assistants will be part of the research team member at Boru Meda General Hospital. The position holders are expected to carry out administrative and scientific work in line with study protocols with the following duties and responsibilities.

Main duties and responsibilities;

  • Collect Patient Report Outcome Measure (PROMS) data.
  • Manage logistics at the study site and study participants recruited.
  • Entering data into Redcap databases based on the data collected.
  • Keeps a record on information obtained during the research. Include a database of information on, hard copy files. 
  • Conduct quality control and consistency checking procedures periodically when the data collection is in progress.
  • Facilitate the data collection and manage storage and archiving of the data.
  • Communicate with the data manager and project coordinator for data quality control regularly.
  • Contribute to the analysis of quantitative data.
  • Assist in the dissemination of findings to policymakers, other stakeholders, and academic audiences
  • Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and conference reports
  • Conduct supportive supervision to support field data collectors.
  • Coordinate interventions and implementation of the project alongside the project coordinator
  • Assist the clinical team with follow-up of the patient and research-related activities.
  • Ensure effective communication between the multi-disciplinary SHARP research team
  • Assist the SHARP team in conducting research-related activities
  • Coordinate other related duties as assigned by the project

Job Requirements

  • MPH/MSC in Public Health; OR
  • BSc in Public Health And two years’ work experience in data collection
  • An experience in coordination in research studies and related fields. 
  • Have adequate data collection experience.
  • Demonstrated research communication and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrable organization and communication skills

Desired Competencies

  • Good teamwork spirit and collaboration with other researchers.
  • Knowledge of different data management software and Microsoft Excel applications
  • Practical Redcap experience has an additional advantage
  • Fluency in English and Amharic communication (spoken & written)
  • Residence in Desssie/Boru Meda or volunteer resettling
