Alight (formerly American Refugee Committee) is an international non-profit organization with its headquarters located in the United States. Alight has provided humanitarian assistance to millions of beneficiaries in 29 countries over the past 40 years, currently reaching over 10 million refugees, IDPs, and disaster-affected communities in 17 countries around the world, helping people regain control of their lives after conflict and natural disasters. Alight maintains full-fledged humanitarian programs in Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, Thailand, and Myanmar. Alight is currently in the process of responding to humanitarian situation in Ethiopia.
Alight focuses on lifesaving humanitarian interventions as well as recovery and resilience building programs designed to create lasting positive change in the lives of vulnerable people. Alight works closely with displaced persons, returnees, refugees and communities affected by natural and man-made disasters, providing a range of integrated assistance including primary and curative health care, water and sanitation, protection services, restoration of strategic health and water infrastructure, dignified housing for returning refugees, and sustainable job creation. Alight has also built strong relationships with development partners, agencies, as well as federal and local governments in order to approach challenges in an inclusive and holistic manner and come up with innovative solutions that best fits the local context.
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The key function of the role is to manage emergency programmes and ensure high quality implementation while building and maintaining sound relationships with key stakeholders. The post-holder works with partner organisations to ensure the emergency response is coordinated effectively in line with Alight country strategy and humanitarian policies.
MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY: PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Effective emergency projects and programmes delivered with impact in line with agreed aims, with funds used for designated purposes.
Humanitarian and financial policies and procedures complied with, in particular, reporting requirements.
Project proposals developed, implemented and completed, based on strong planning and evaluation of previous interventions and needs assessments, in line with Alight best practice requirements.
Positive relationships maintained and developed with partners and government institutions through effective communication.
New partners nurtured and coached, bringing their systems up to international standards and working to build a long-term partnership.
Monitoring systems clearly set up and implemented for all projects and partners offered support and coaching in developing their own monitoring and evaluation systems.
Project impact monitored and evaluated, and project learning shared with key stakeholders through accurate, effective and timely reporting as per donor schedule.
Strong linkages maintained between partners work and advocacy, communications and fundraising activities.
Positive relationships maintained and developed with donors and other sources of emergency funding where necessary.
Identification of opportunities for community based, peace building initiatives
Significant grant proposals based on strong planning and evaluation procedures using Alight’s internal systems.
Relationships
External: Liaising with external stakeholders, including the wider Humanitarian donors, as well as government sector offices and NGO operating in the area and other humanitarian actors as deemed necessary
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, with frequent visits to other regions.

Reporting to: Protection Manager & Deputy Country Director
Applied skills/knowledge and expertise:
Degree or equivalent in relevant technical discipline, particularly in Social Science, Disaster Risk Management, DRR and EW, Development Studies or related fields with at least 5 years’ of experience working with an international NGO or with an institutional donor
Knowledge and experience of emergency relief, rehabilitation and recovery programme issues.
Knowledge of global development issues, including policy and advocacy topics and familiarity with emergency problems relevant to country or the northern region.
Knowledge of the political, social and economic context of the area and the development issues and challenges it faces.
Knowledge of capacity building tools and techniques.
Professional experience in living and working in a disaster affected areas.
An adaptable attitude, decisiveness, and the capacity to make sound decisions with incomplete information.
Relevant experience of emergency project/programme management working with and through local partners.
Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills with ability to work as a team member and the ability to effectively represent Alight at local level.
Knowledge in monitoring, evaluation and research approaches for humanitarian work.
Ability to work independently, self-directed, to meet deadlines and ability of working under pressure and with multiple priorities.
