Job Summary

The Health officer is responsible for the provision of quality, lifesaving care in the supported health facility and mobile clinics, through consultations, referral, and follow-up and accurate patient record keeping as per Ministry of Health (MoH) protocols.

Job Description 

Medical / Technical

  • Provide consultations with diagnosis and treatment of illnesses based on the guidelines in Ethiopia and focusing initially on IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses)

  • Support the treatment of co-infections in children diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition and referred to an appropriate outpatient treatment program.

  • Provide appropriate referrals to the relevant referral sites in a timely fashion without delays

  • Prescribe medications and instruct patients on correct usage based on guidelines

  • Ensure medical supplies are available and support the projection of needs

  • Provide patient education and instruct on prevention methods for illness, proper nutrition, and hygiene

  • Compile weekly and monthly reports required by the Ministry of Health and provide to the clinic in-charge.

  • Follow EPI routine/campaigns sessions at clinic and catchment

  • Follow infection, prevention, and control protocols through maintaining good hand hygiene and appropriately using personal protective equipment

  • Ensure the Safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies.

Quality Management

  • Ensures quality clinical consultations, treatment, referral and follow up activities possible within the challenging context of Afar Region following the MoH and International (WHO) protocols.

  • Ensure all patients are treated based on the Guidelines of the Ministry of Health guidelines.

  • Ensure rational use of drugs such that only those essential for treatment are prescribed.

  • Provide compassionate and respectful care to all patients who present to the clinic

  • Support other staff and colleagues to maintain good infection control practices to prevent spread of illnesses within the clinic and among the staff

  • Ensures all consultations with patients are in a dignified, confidential and appropriate manner in keeping with the standards and principles set out by MDM.

Additional activities

  • Support other areas of the clinic as requested or needed to ensure efficiency and quality of care to all

  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment, disposing of waste and sharps appropriately.

  • Ensure the Safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS         

This position requires frequent travel to health facilities located in remote areas with very basic living conditions.

Job Requirements

 EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTFICATION

  • BSC Degree in Medicine or Public Health officer

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 1 year of professional experience after qualification

  • Working experience as health officer in a health facility/Mobile Clinic in emergency is an added asset.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of development & humanitarian issues and concepts

  • Fluent spoken and written Amharic and English.

  • Knowing the local language is an added asset

  • Strong interpersonal and team skills 

  • Proven ability to be flexible in demanding situations

  • Excellent communicator

  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment

  • Negotiation and representation skills

  • Analytical and problem-solving Computer literate, able to work efficiently in Microsoft office on standard or mobile platforms.
