Job Summary
The Health officer is responsible for the provision of quality, lifesaving care in the supported health facility and mobile clinics, through consultations, referral, and follow-up and accurate patient record keeping as per Ministry of Health (MoH) protocols.
Job Description
Medical / Technical
Provide consultations with diagnosis and treatment of illnesses based on the guidelines in Ethiopia and focusing initially on IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses)
Support the treatment of co-infections in children diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition and referred to an appropriate outpatient treatment program.
Provide appropriate referrals to the relevant referral sites in a timely fashion without delays
Prescribe medications and instruct patients on correct usage based on guidelines
Ensure medical supplies are available and support the projection of needs
Provide patient education and instruct on prevention methods for illness, proper nutrition, and hygiene
Compile weekly and monthly reports required by the Ministry of Health and provide to the clinic in-charge.
Follow EPI routine/campaigns sessions at clinic and catchment
Follow infection, prevention, and control protocols through maintaining good hand hygiene and appropriately using personal protective equipment
Ensure the Safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies.
Quality Management
Ensures quality clinical consultations, treatment, referral and follow up activities possible within the challenging context of Afar Region following the MoH and International (WHO) protocols.
Ensure all patients are treated based on the Guidelines of the Ministry of Health guidelines.
Ensure rational use of drugs such that only those essential for treatment are prescribed.
Provide compassionate and respectful care to all patients who present to the clinic
Support other staff and colleagues to maintain good infection control practices to prevent spread of illnesses within the clinic and among the staff
Ensures all consultations with patients are in a dignified, confidential and appropriate manner in keeping with the standards and principles set out by MDM.
Additional activities
Support other areas of the clinic as requested or needed to ensure efficiency and quality of care to all
Maintain a clean and safe working environment, disposing of waste and sharps appropriately.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS
This position requires frequent travel to health facilities located in remote areas with very basic living conditions.

Job Requirements
EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTFICATION
BSC Degree in Medicine or Public Health officer
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 1 year of professional experience after qualification
Working experience as health officer in a health facility/Mobile Clinic in emergency is an added asset.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of development & humanitarian issues and concepts
Fluent spoken and written Amharic and English.
Knowing the local language is an added asset
Strong interpersonal and team skills
Proven ability to be flexible in demanding situations
Excellent communicator
Ability to adapt to a changing environment
Negotiation and representation skills
Analytical and problem-solving Computer literate, able to work efficiently in Microsoft office on standard or mobile platforms.
