The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to heal survivors of torture and war trauma. We provide direct care for those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture and war trauma, research and advocate for human rights and end the practice of torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, USA with offices in Africa and the Middle East.  

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Counseling: Work alongside counsellors to provide psychosocial services to individuals, groups and communities to assist them to recover from the effects of torture and war trauma by:

Completing an initial screening and intake assessment; individual and group treatment plans; case management including timely referral, follow-up, and advocacy if necessary; home visits; and follow-up assessments.

• Carrying out individual or family counseling sessions with clients.

• Facilitating of group counseling processes, including selection of group members planning the group process, and group facilitation.

• Providing interpretation between clients and other CVT staff members when needed.

• Ensuring that all required documentation is completed in a timely and professional manner. 

• Ensuring that all work with clients is confidential and that ethical practices are observed at all times. 

• Assist in planning and implementing community’s awareness, sensitization, education campaigns, understanding and engagement with the issues relating to mental health, war trauma, and torture.

• Making the CVT services known and accessible to people whose psychosocial functioning has been impaired by their experiences of torture and trauma.

• Identification, encouragement access CVT services, development of referral systems and encourage collaboration between local groups and leaders, CBOs, local and international NGOs, and government ministries. 

• Attend interagency meetings to improve service delivery to our client groups and access opportunities to forward CVT’s work. Ensure that the reporting and documentation of these processes is completed and minutes of meetings are filed.

• Handling high risk cases

 Supervision support:

•  Assist Psychotherapist/Trainer with monitoring on-going daily clinical activities;

• Regularly review counsellors, caseloads, tasks, planning and ensuring that targets, ethical processes, proper documentation, and reporting procedures are adhered to;

• Assist in other administrative and supervision activities such as assigned by the Psychotherapist/Trainer.

• Organize, prepare and chair (if needed) Team meetings as directed by the Psychotherapist/Trainer. 

• Assist in ongoing training of Counselors and community incentive workers.

Community Collaboration and External Training:

•  With support from the Psychotherapist/Trainer, and in compliance with project objectives, identify potential external training participants (health facility, social welfare, CBO, NGO and INGO staff);

•  Coordinate services with other organizations operating in the camps and provide training to these organizations to better address the needs of trauma survivors in the community. 

• Assist in designing, planning, implementing and facilitating external and community training programs in order to develop a supportive environment for people whose psychosocial functioning has been affected by experiences of torture and refugee trauma. 

• Contribute to completing the documentation and reporting of external training.

Reporting:

• Assist with gathering of information and writing of regular reports regarding clinical and training activities.

Program/Project Evaluation:

• Participate in and assist with the implementation of program evaluation.

Self-care:

• Promote and practice self-care through implementing Psychotherapist/Trainer’s recommendations to support debriefing, case conferences, and supervision follow through and feedback on counsellors, selfcare objectives and schedule.

Liaise with Admin and Logistics as needed to ensure:

•  To plan coordination and requisition of needed counselling and office supplies in a good time, and to ensure stewardship and care of materials and supplies, in the possession of counsellors.

Representative of CVT:

• Good knowledge of CVTs policy, objectives and interventions to introduce to others

• Participate as member of the program team to achieve program objectives.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Psychotherapist/Trainer.

 General conditions

• Is strictly committed to respect CVT’s confidentiality policy and refrain from using any information that s/he will know about a client outside of CVT

• Will not approach (potential) beneficiaries for their involvement in non CVT activities without prior approval of CVT supervisor.

• Keep absolute confidentiality on all information managed. Obligated to report any information to the supervisor when the security of CVT staff and/or of CVT beneficiary might become an issue.

• This job profile can be adapted and changed according to the evolution of CVT activities. 

Terms of Employment: the contract is effective from August1st, 2022 through January31, 2023 with possibility of extension. 

Number of Individuals Recruited: One (1) 

Location: CVT Mobile unit in Sekota and surrounding areas, Amhara, Ethiopia. Travel to additional CVT field centers as necessary.

Supervisees: Community Mobilizers, Incentive Workers 

Supervisor: Psychotherapist/Trainer

This is a full-time position based in CVT mobile unit in Sekota and surrounding areas, Amhara, Ethiopia. The position holders will report to the Psychotherapist/Trainer clinically, and to the Admin/HR Officer administratively.  

Duty Station:  Mobile unit in Sekota and surrounding areas, Amhara, Ethiopia     

Department: Program

Duration: 6 months with possible extension 

Job Requirements

• Master’s degree or pursuing equivalent in Counseling or Clinical Psychology, Clinical Social Work desired. Relevant Master’s degrees may be considered.

• Demonstrated clinical intuition and therapeutic competencies, including counseling micro skills and reflective practice.

• Fluent in Amharic and English, written and spoken. Knowledge of other local and refugee languages preferred.

• Three years or more experience providing individual and group psychotherapy in INGO or in similar settings required.

• Two years and above experience with trauma treatment highly desirable.

• Understanding of and experience implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions, including individual, group and community-based approaches for people who have suffered trauma required.

• Understanding of and experience in developing and providing training on mental health topics including the effects of trauma and war required.  

• Experience supervising mental health counselors preferred

• Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing program requirements, client needs, and political climate required.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including empathic listening required

• Ability to communicate in a highly professional manner with clients, community members and professional partners required

• Strong administrative skills (computer skills highly desirable)

• Able to complete required reporting and documentation by deadlines required.

• Able to maintain confidentiality required.

• Able to work independently; self-motivated

• Problem solving and conflict resolution skills

• Skilled at working as a member of a team.
