The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical, Research studies, Vaccine and Traditional Medicine research institute that works in developing tools for research studies, Vaccine, prevention, control and treatment of neglected tropical disease (NTD) and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied, basic biomedical research, research studies and training.

This is a Laboratory Coordinator is a specialized research professional working with and under the direction of both the Laboratory Principal Investigator (PI) and Study coordinator (SC). While the Principal Investigator or study coordinator is primarily responsible for the overall design, conduct, and management of the clinical trial, the Laboratory Coordinator supports, facilitates and coordinates the daily Laboratory activities and plays a critical role in the conduct of the study. By performing these duties, the Laboratory Coordinator closely works with the PI, SC, department, sponsor, and institution to support and provide guidance on the administration of the compliance, personnel and other related aspects of the Laboratory study.

The Laboratory Coordinator reports primarily to the MNTD Directorate with associated responsibilities to the department head, Data manager or program administrator

 Major role and responsibility

• Assuring Good laboratory practice in AHRI as well as in sites.

•  Provide ISO 15189:2012 standard compliance support.

• Provide training and guidance in the areas Laboratory quality management system (LQMS) to laboratory project teams

• Provide Laboratory Quality Assurance practice related activities

• Review regulated documents and Records, such as Lab SOPs, PT results, Patients results and LIS 

• Conduct Lab internal audits to assess compliance with ISO 15O 15189:2022 requirements

• Provide training sample transport requirements compliance with International Air Transport Association (IATA)

• Coordinate to transport clinical samples such as Cl and Malaria samples and slides according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) requirements

• Audit study reports and raw data for compliance with protocols, SOPs and regulations

• Lead interactions with AHRI Laboratory and development personnel regarding clinical compliance matters

• Communicate compliance requirements at all levels

• Identify compliance weaknesses and assist with the implementation of workable solutions

• Provide risk assessment expertise for internal projects and processes.

• Perform other related duties as required by PI and willing to work interdepartmental

• Experience in field travel is and added advantage 

Job Requirements

• BSc degree in Medical Laboratory Science with 4 years’ experience, Master’s degree in microbiology with 2 years’ experience from an accredited institution.

• Training in programmatic and clinical management of MNTDs

• Experience in Laboratory research and clinical lab practice is mandatory  

• Experience and knowledge of GCP and GLP is mandatory

• Trained GCLP and quality management system mandatory

• Tolerance to doing routine and frequent field visits

• Attention to details for quality data record and documentation

Ability to maintain study confidentiality
