Job Description
Background
The ASAL programme aims at improving those factors, which put the pastoral livelihood system currently most under stress and are associated with competition for land and water: declining pastures and pasture quality, soil degradation and shortage of water). In support of planning of water resource investments in selected woredas in Afar Region is an ongoing Hydrological Assessment of Perennial and Spate Irrigation Potential for Afar Region. The study assesses the availability of water resources, its quality, river flow, groundwater and rainfall trends in the project areas and will focus on the Project Area and associated key rivers.
Overall Responsibilities
The National Hydrologist will fully support the International Hydrologist in the continuation of the study. He will be stationed in Afar and will be expected to work in collaboration with the Regional project executing agency (BoLARND).
Specific Tasks
Assist the International Hydrologist in the provision of hydrological characteristics and analysis in support of planning of water resource investments in selected woredas in Afar Region, focusing on Project Area and involved rivers.
Assist the International Hydrologist to continue implementation of a hydrological study in support of planning of water resource investments in selected woredas in Afar Region (Project Area). This includes GIS based and physical inspection of areas of interest in the various investment priorities areas for:
Irrigation expansion along the six rivers with perennial flow,
Irrigation potential in selected (semi-) perennial and seasonal rivers in the project area,
Spate irrigation introduction,
Water harvesting/ retention water support for crop growth.
Programme: Strengthening Drought Resilience of Pastoral and Agro-pastoral Livelihoods in Ethiopian Arid and Semi-arid Lands (ASAL), SDR-2 Component, Ethiopia
Duty station: Addis Ababa and Semera/Afar Region with fact and information finding coordination meetings to possibly other areas
Assignment period: Approx. 1.5 PM, short-term, 1 or 2 missions of flexible duration(s), as of the middle of October 2022, including travel and reporting time.
Summary scope: Assisting the International Hydrologist in the continuation of a study to assess the irrigation potential in selected perennial and seasonal rivers in the project area in Afar Region.
Qualifications:
Degree qualification in hydrology/hydrogeology or a similar field;
At least 5 years of practical work experience related to hydrology including use of industry-standard software;
Work experience gained in international organisations, public sector institutions and/or funding agencies;
Specific work experience in Afar Region; and
Proficiency in the English language, knowledge of Afar being an asset.
