Our Profile

Centre for Justice (CJ) is an independent and impartial Ethiopian Civil Society Organization working nationally to promote criminal justice systems that uphold human rights for all  and advocating for the advancement of rule of law, human rights, access to justice, democratic governance, peace and the progressive reform of Ethiopian criminal Justice System. It was registered at Federal Civil Societies Organizations Authorities under Registration Number 0865.

The objectives of the organization  includes  promotion  and protection of human rights in Ethiopia through strengthening  the rule of law , human rights education , documentation  and reporting of human rights violations, increasing access to justice , advocating  for a national penal policy that promotes effective non-custodial responses to crime, and uses prison as a last resort, promoting humane conditions of detention and social rehabilitation and re-integration of prisoners and  promoting peaceful and inclusive societies (Goal 16 of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda).

CJ is committed to the cause of inmates providing legal and professional services to the under privileged segments of the society. It also aims at accessing human rights and legal information to these groups so as to enable them use the law and human rights as a resource in bringing about a shift in the development process. To realize its objective, CJ has been designing and carrying out a number of programs and activities based on intensive studies and researches. This assignment is a part of CJ’s research undertaking on a group of citizens whose issues are not often visible and popular among the general public.

Vision

Peaceful and democratic societies in which criminal justice systems promote rule of law and protect the human rights of disadvantaged people.

Criminal justice systems that respect the rule of law uphold the rights of suspects and defendants and prevent the unnecessary use of pre-trial detention.

Humane treatment and conditions for prisoners and prevention of torture in all places of detention.

Safer communities through rehabilitation, reintegration interventions and interventions to reduce re-offending.

Mission

CJ works to promote criminal justice system that uphold human rights for all; and runs practical human rights programmes and support reforms that make criminal justice fair and effective and works to transform Ethiopia to democratically governed community of nation that offers security to its population and is capable of peaceful conflict management to achieve our vision.

CJ Effort on Prison Reforms in Ethiopia

CJ has been working on the improvement of the justice system in general and criminal justice most particularly Prison Reform works in particular in the past 12 years. Some of the key achievements of the organization include:

• Contributing to the institutional capacity building of prison administrations and national legislation reform.

• Advocating the criminal justice systems to take account of the specific characteristics of women and adopt gender-sensitive approaches to meet their needs and protect their human rights in the prison settings.

• Challenge the necessity of imprisonment children and young adults, which can cause long-term psychological and physical harm as well as social, educational, and economic disadvantage, isolation from family and community, stigmatization, and put children and young adults at risk of physical and emotional abuse.

• Increasing the attention given to  children detained with their mothers , young adults in conflict with the law  and women prisoners 

• Practical reform of prison system to bring about systematic and comprehensive change.

• Introducing/piloting innovative prisoners rehabilitation programs in Ethiopia.

• Supporting practical reform of prison health care and prisoners rehabilitation facilities  and services

Period: One year with a possibility of extension based on performance
