Job Description

CareEpilepsy Ethiopia is a nationally registered (Registration Number 3380) charitable organization which was founded on 3rd February 2015.  Its vision is to see people with epilepsy and associated disabilities healthy, productive, and free from discrimination and stigma.  It aims to achieve a better quality of life for people affected by epilepsy with the focus on holistic community care that incorporates clinical and non-clinical support. 

CareEpilepsy Ethiopia finds new ways of tackling major social challenges for people with epilepsy by working alongside local communities, using the tools of social innovation. We run a range of programmes, and work in partnership with other organizations, thinkers and policymakers to achieve this. We have been supporting people with epilepsy, their families and the community in general since 2016.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision by the CareEpilepsy Ethiopia Administrative and Finance Health, Director, Lead Clinic Manager, the incumbent performs community teaching and nursing duties ensuring efficient delivery and client/patient care in accordance with accepted standard medical practice and professional codes of conduct.

DUTIES/TASKS

General

  • Provide support the running of epilepsy clinics.

  • Provides nursing services, within defined scope of practice, to patients based on patient assessment and care planning procedures;

  • Performs nursing interventions such as taking vital signs, applying aseptic techniques including sterile dressing, ensuring infection control, and conducting specimen collection;

  • Takes blood pressure, temperature and pulse of epilepsy patients as part of regular follow-up;

  • Administers medication;

  • Make weekly home monitoring clinical service on the phone at times in patients home to folloup their clinical care;

  • Provides counseling to those epilepsy patients having physiological or social difficulties;

  • Provides epilepsy education to individuals and their families.

  • Arrange and attend the patient support group meeting;

  • Accompanies patients on outside recreational activities and perform other duties related to patient care and comfort

  • Administers first aid in emergency situations;

   Wellbeing and Training

  • Organize and attend community education in health center, hospitals and various events which engage and involve people from a range of different backgrounds;

  • Develop a range of training and education packages on all aspects of the treatment and management of epilepsy;

  • Organize and run income generating activities for patients;

  • Design and deliver a range of innovative community outreach and engagement activities;

  • Undertaking clinical audit and research and develop evidence-based approaches.

  • Sets up and provide leisure activities for patients.

Related Duties/Tasks

  • Take the lead role in registering patients and informing them the services they will get from our organization and the responsibilities they bare;

  • Prepares and submits periodic reports as required;

  • Accounts for all assets under his/her custody during regular stock taking and audit as and when required;

  • Maintain inventory of supplies; accounts for all assets under his/her custody during regular stock taking and audit as and when required;

  • Respond to relevant enquiries via telephone, and email with regards to the patients’ and CareEpilepsy Ethiopia issues;

  • Working as part of a team to organize and hold events that draw in and involve local partners;

  • Performs related tasks as required;

  • Organize and attending meetings. 

Communication

  • Developing and sustaining positive relationships with a range of people, including community leaders, local groups and organizations, and local authorities;

  • Working as part of a team to support and sustain community-led action around issues related to epilepsy and;

  • Publicizing CareEpilepsy Ethiopia’s project through flyers, posters, with local groups and organizations.

Career Level: Mid Level ( 2+ 3 years experience)

Type of Employment: One year with a possibility of extension

Job Requirements

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Education:

  • BSc in Nursing / Health Officer

Experience

  • Minimum of Two Years’ experience as junior nurse/health officer

Skills, Attitudes and Attributes

  • Ability to make logical and timely decisions;

  • Counseling skill;

  • Able to role-model inclusive and culturally sensitive attitudes and behaviors;

  • Share our commitment to tackling inequality and putting people of epilepsy at the heart of social change, particularly in relation to epilepsy health and wellbeing;

  • Strong communication skills including presenting, facilitation, and relationship building;

  • Awareness of concepts and strategies of quality care;

  • Hard-working, reliable and professional, able to manage a varied and challenging workload and able to work well both as part of a team and alone;

  • Willing and able to work in different environments, including being office based and within communities;

  • Proficient in MS Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel and Word;

  • Good command of English and can type in Amharic and English.

Desirable

  • Knowledge about epilepsy

  • Experience of working in community outreach and engagement, particularly with disadvantaged groups.

  • Experience of organizing workshops and activities.

  • Experience of giving training to others

  • Experience of using social media
