Brooke is an international animal welfare organization working to improve the lives of working horses, donkeys, mules and the people who depend on them. We reach over 2 million working animals across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Our staff include vets, animal welfare experts and advocacy and development specialists.

Our aim is to equip local people with the knowledge and skills to give their horse, donkey or mule a better life; and to enhance local capacity and conducive environment to sustainably improve the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules. Brooke has been working in Ethiopia since 2006 with a country office in Addis Ababa.

Main Purpose of the Job

This role has key responsibility to drive a veterinary mobile clinic equipped and furnished to treat animals in urban places and undertake euthanasia on regular basis.   The role requires intensive driving, ensuring that all passengers, animals and equipment’s are safe and that The Brooke’s and partners vehicle and other goods are all secure at all-times while also and providing other Administrative and logistics supports.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

1.      Drive The Brooke’s /partners vehicles as required.

a.      Ensure that passengers and other road users are safe.

b.      Ensure that animals are transported properly to the temporary shelter cites  and safely using the vets advise

c.       Ensure that euthanized animals are loaded and disposed based on the advice of the vets

d.      Ensure that the biosafety of the vehicle and other wastes are properly collected and disposed as a team

e.      Ensure that the euthanized equine are properly  disposed  at appropriate disposal  sites  as per  the guidance of the  project team

f.        Ensure that the vehicle and its contents are secure

g.      Complete the log book for the daily journey.

h.      Keep the vehicle clean and tidy at all times

2.      Ensure that the vehicle is kept in good condition

a.      Check the fuel, water, oil, and tires of the vehicle on daily bases.

b.      Ensure seat belts and other safety equipment is in good working order.

c.       Keep the hygiene of the vehicles for ensuring the health of the project team as it transporting the equine, and the people at a time. 

d.      Carry out minor repairs directly, and promptly report the need for garage repair.

e.      Prepare spare part required for vehicles maintenance & confirm that all purchased spare parts are used for the intended vehicle.

f.         When garage repair or service is authorized, arrange the vehicle to be taken to the garage for repair of service.

g.       Closely follow up and support the repair and maintenance activities. Ensure the garage made the maintenance properly.

h.      Confirm that maintained vehicles are functioning properly.

 3.      Safety

a.      While the vets on the clinic are on duty, carefully manage and control crowds on the area and theft of materials.

b.      Ensure any leftover bio wastes and sharps are collected in a safe place

c.       Ensure that the basic road safety equipment is carried including a roadworthy, spare tyre, and other tools.

d.      Ensure that the vehicle carries a fire extinguisher as well as an effective first aid kit and asset of latex gloves.

e.      Report any theft of equipment or other property from the vehicle immediately.

4.      Administrative and Logistics Support

a.      Get timely to the treatment and service delivery points with the professionals.

b.      Follow up yearly examination of vehicles at road transport authority.

c.       Payment of bills periodically as required.

d.      Deliver mail and documents as assigned.

e.      Perform other tasks as directed by the office or line manager.

Job Requirements

-  At least 4 years relevant driving experience for NGO / government vehicles in Ethiopia with an extensive knowledge of the road systems in Ethiopia.

- Valid driving license Derk 1 with exemplary history and knowledge of the regulations and bylaws for driving in Ethiopia.

- Ability to drive on all-terrains to ensure the proper care of the vehicle, equipment and passengers inside, along with experience of how to safely recover a vehicle if becomes stuck.

- Ability to perform vehicle maintenance checks and perform minor repairs such as replacing oil and tires.

- High school certificate, good spoken and written English, basic numeracy skills and fluency in at least one of the main local languages.

- Willing to work flexibly and undertake long-distance drives with overnight stays for up to a week at a time.

 Team work and margining multiple work at a time is   a required requirement

 Auto mechanic skill is recommendable
