Internal and External Vacancy Announcement

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a world leading organization committed to the treatment and reintegration of patients suffering from Obstetric Fistula and the training and deployment of qualified midwives to prevent Obstetric Fistula and other childbirth injuries.

HFE, which was established in 1974 G.C by Drs. Catherine and Reginald Hamlin, has been caring for the women of Ethiopia for more than 60 years. Including our main Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, we have five regional Hospitals, Rehabilitation and Reintegration center and The Hamlin College of Midwives. We deploy midwives into rural health centers across the country and provide mentoring and other support services to these facilities.

The Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is delighted to invite applications for the Communications Officer position

Purpose: To Support the Head, Office of the CEO for the proper implementation of communication, awareness and partnership strategies of HFE Carryout all media works including the development and implementation of plans and provide technical assistance in relation to influencing, communication and best use of the media.

Main Duties:

  • To manage all matters related to guests who visit the hospital, including hospital tours, preparing timetables for guests arriving and communicating with all relevant staff concerning reception of the guests.

  • To prepare suitable schedule for visitors in line with concerned staff members to keep the smooth working relation.

  • To give a presentation to visitors about the work done in the Hospital, in outreach centers, in Hamlin College of Midwives, and Rehabilitation and reintegration.

  • To prepare newsletter, thank letters, updates and stories of patients, Hamlin College of Midwives students, Hamlin College of Midwives’ graduate midwives, etc. to keep partner organizations informed about the work of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.

  • To ensure the proper communication/dissemination of messages, research outputs, learning and awareness raising materials printed as well as broadcast, in order to target audience using the proper medium.

  • To identify and write stories of patients, Hamlin College students, and Hamlin Graduate

  • Midwives both in English and Amharic in the main Hospital and outreach centers based on field visits and manage it to be published in different print media including the Internet.

  • To insure that all major events and ceremonies of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia are correctly covered and advertised.

  • To develop and prepare public relation materials relevant to Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia such as Brochures, flyers, posters, newsletters, posters, newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, and other documents periodically.

  • To examine issues advertised and to be advertised to ensure that they have been correctly Prepared.

  • To organize exhibitions, conferences and meetings.

  • To ensure proper recording and filling of press cuttings for public relations and responding to    Public queries.

  • To prepare responses to public queries on matters relating to the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.

  • To draft replies to general correspondents and queries directed at Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE).

  • To develop and maintain/strengthen partnerships and network with other stakeholders especially with media institutions and journalists to strengthen the media related works of HFE.

  • To build HFE staff capacity in identifying basic information about HFE’s works to prepare major HFE’s works stories and messages.

  • To give support to all departments of HFE in maintaining media relations and using every opportunity to introduce the works and working methods of HFE.

  • To initiate and organize media and communications related trainings, workshops, seminars and meetings and participate HFE employees.

  • To develop and update a detailed information database of key media agencies, research organizations, government, NGO's, provincial, national and international organizations that can be used for targeted knowledge dissemination.

  • To identify opportunities to increase HFE public relations through participating in exhibitions and meetings at provincial, national and international events.

  • To develop and implement patient privacy policy in accordance with the intended audience.

  • To perform any other work-related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education Requirement

  • BA degree in English Language and Literature, Journalism/Mass media/communications or related fields

Work Experience

  • 5 years and above in a related field

Gender: Male or Female

Skills and abilities

  • Excellent Knowledge and understanding in journalism and communications.

  • Excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.

  • Fluency in English language and written communication.

  • Demonstrated technical ability, sound judgment, and ability to work effectively with others at all levels.

  • Firm belief in teamwork, gender equality, sensitivity to material issues, participatory approach   and sustainable development.

  • Proven computer skills related to the assignment

  • Strong communication Skill

  • Commitment to values and working styles of HFE.
