Job Description
International Media Support supports local independent media and media advocacy groups in countries affected by conflict, political transition and authoritarian rule. Set up in 2001, the organisation has since then worked with hundreds of local and international partners to support independent journalism, freedom of expression and the safety of journalists
IMS is in close collaboration with Fojo Media Institute implementing the Ethiopian Media Reform Programme
The Programme Officer will collaborate with the Fojo-IMS programme team to strengthen partners and targeted media in becoming financially sustainable and to produce and disseminate public interest journalism, reflecting the full composition of the society through a balanced presence of women and men, age groups and communities.
The Programme Officer is responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, and documenting program activities to professionalize the practice of public interest journalism and sustainable media management skills in Ethiopia according to approved workplans and budgets, and in line with the Results Framework.
The Program Officer will under the guidance of the programme management contribute to the achievement of the overall and specific objectives of this area following the intervention logic of the IMS-Fojo Ethiopia programme.
Key functions and key responsibilities
Work closely with identified Ethiopian media partners and respond to their needs and proposed calls for support on topics such as media professionalism, journalism education, media literacy, media viability, gender and inclusion (according to annual workplans and partner agreements) as well as further developments of the programme including lessons learnt.
Manage and support partner activities/agreements according to approved workplan and budget, including visits and reports.
Prepare project contract documents, Direct Implementation Notes, ToRs and MoUs, working closely with the Financial Manager
Secure activities (including training) for capacity building of journalists, editors and other editorial functions
Secure a gender-sensitive, inclusive and diversified mix of partners and activities including women, minorities, ethnic groups and securing a balance between Addis and the regional states
Knowledge and processes to incorporate an audience centric approach to editorial and commercial media development: support the work with the media viability programme
In discussion with Programme Manager, receive/gather/keep up to date and follow up on current research trends and expertise from international and regional (African) media practice.
Evaluate and analyse reports to ensure the appropriateness of documentation of activities. Follow-up action on programme implementation of activities
Report to the Programme Manager on outcomes and outputs.
Work closely with the M&E support (HQ and locally) to monitor and evaluate outputs and outcomes
Assist in developing and monitoring annual work plans, budgets, and results/outputs.
Draft relevant sections of reports and assist in the development of documents, presentations, and other appropriate means of communication to key stakeholders.
Together with the communication officer, develop and secure communication and visibility of partner activities and accomplishments.
Participate in team meetings
Represent the programme with local partners, at conferences, seminars etc.
Duration and location
Expected length of employment: 12 months with a probation period of 3 months (with possibility of extension).
Salary will be commensurate with experience and IMS policies.

Organisation
You will report to the Programme Manager and work closely with the team in Ethiopia, and liaise frequently with colleagues in HQ in Copenhagen.
Qualifications
BA/BSC, MA or MSC degree in development or humanitarian studies, Media studies, Media Management, Journalism, Business Administration, Leadership, Social Sciences or a combination of these and other related fields
At least 5 years’ experience in programme management, media capacity building journalism, Communication for Development, Communication with Communities, humanitarian reporting, or similar areas.
Knowledge of the Ethiopian political and humanitarian context including the roles of different national and international stakeholders, global and regional media development issues and challenges for a free and independent media.
Profound knowledge of, and experience in, working with the media sector, especially an understanding of the challenges of the media sector
Knowledge and experiences of working with gender issues as well as with broad inclusion (media inclusion of all groups, ethnic groups, socio-demographic groups and communities
Proven ability and experience to work and support partners to develop skills, mentoring programmes, and planning and operating participatory training programmes.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex concept both verbally and orally to influence others. Very good skills in English, Amharic and other languages.
Ability to work effectively, in a team but also independent, with a wide range of people from different organisations and backgrounds, including experience in influencing others and organizing advocacy activities.
