Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a world leading organization committed to the treatment and reintegration of patients suffering from Obstetric Fistula and the training and deployment of qualified midwives to prevent Obstetric Fistula and other child birth injuries.

HFE, which was established in 1974 G.C by Drs. Catherine and Reginald Hamlin, has been caring for the women of Ethiopia for almost 60 years. Including our main Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa we have 5 regional Hospitals, Rehabilitation and Reintegration center and The Hamlin College of Midwives. We deploy midwives into rural health centers across the country and provide mentoring and other support services to these facilities.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia in collaboration with Stakeholders is going to implement a Partnership program called Woreda by Woreda (WbyW); to enable Woredas to be free of obstetric Fistula by ‘2030. The W by W program as a pilot will be applied at Oromia Region, Illu Ababora(Mettu). This W by W strategy will be used to identify historic cases of obstetric fistula and continue to implement quality intervention for prevention of new obstetric fistula cases. For the successful implementation of the program, HFE wants to  employ experienced Team Leader for this Program/Project to be part of the program interventions, trainings, and mentorship in the areas as per the given job responsibilities.

Job Summary

The team leader will coordinate the overall Woreda-by-Woreda (Eradication of Fistula) project in collaboration with Hamlin college of Midwives team through providing strategic leadership towards achievement of the project goal. In addition, he/she will also be involved in technical support for the team as deemed. This position also requires quality improvement approaches as well as current trends in service delivery, training and capacity building approaches that are based on scientific evidence.

Major Duties and Responsibilities of The team leader includes the following, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the main technical interface between HFE local stakeholders as it applies to Maternal and Child Health

  • Liaise with technical steering groups, HFE head office and Woreda technical working groups for woreda by woreda Fistula free Program.

  • Oversee the team and motivate them to conduct their activities efficiently through planning and providing daily activities for the team.

  • Prepare analyses, recommendations, briefing notes, and assessments of the project in relation to delivery

  • Anticipate and provide timely solutions for the identified challenges during the project.

  • Address inefficient performances and provide timely feedback, as a team or individually, to improve the gaps.

  • Work in collaboration with the Health Centers where Hamlin Midwives are deployed to support aspects of the strategic direction and leadership of the maternal and child health programming guiding linkages and integration within the overall health sector.

  • Coordinate meetings with Hamlin College of Midwives central team and other HFE staff to provide regular updates on progress of achievements against set targets, program challenges and successes, as well as ways forward for on-going implementation.

  • Be involved in analysis of data collected during project implementation to obtain evidence based trends and follow program progress against set targets;

  • Lead and support the team to utilize data for informed decision making on program direction.

  • Provide any technical support to Midwife mentors, woreda health offices and other stakeholders in the prevention of obstetric fistula, identification and referral of fistula patients and facilitate their treatment.

  • Leads the planning and implementation of the project in line with the organization’s mission, policies, strategies and available resources

  • Submit timely report of the project, patient identification and progress of Woreda by woreda strategy, to concerned body when necessary.

  • Liaise with technical steering groups for woreda by woreda Fistula free Program.

  • Liaise with the head office and Woreda technical working groups at Woreda health bureaus.

  • Explores best mechanisms and make ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the project.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the central team (Hamlin College of Midwives).

Job Requirements

Education

  • MSc Degree in Midwifery and/or MSc, MPH in maternal and child health related fields

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience as a coordinator in community based activities, such as managing health related programs/projects at national, regional or at Zonal level is preferred.

Key competencies and professional expertise required

  • Demonstrated qualifications and experience in program design, monitoring and evaluation of health programs, and provision of technical assistance; experience working in community health preferred.

  • Excellent analytical and written skills.

  • Excellent working skill of computer software packages including Microsoft excel.

  • Fluent in English, Afaan Oromo, Amharic  and other  local languages is preferred 

  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.

  • Ability to work well both within a team and independently.

  • Proven clinical and program experience working in the delivery of maternal and child health service delivery programs.

  • Proven experience developing and implementing service delivery protocols, norms and standards.

  • Ability to develop productive working relationships with counterparts in other agencies and organizations.

  • Ability to write technical documents for both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to coach, train, and mentor teammates from diverse technical and cultural backgrounds in the areas of maternal and newborn health.

  • Excellent analytical, writing, and presentation skills.

  • Proven facilitation, team building, and coordination skills.

  • Willingness and ability to travel for extensive field trip.

  • Being an active listener and critical thinker is highly recommended
