Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a world leading organization committed to the treatment and reintegration of patients suffering from Obstetric Fistula and the training and deployment of qualified midwives to prevent Obstetric Fistula and other childbirth injuries.
HFE, which was established in 1974 G.C by Drs. Catherine and Reginald Hamlin, has been caring for the women of Ethiopia for more than 60 years. Including our main Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, we have five regional Hospitals, Rehabilitation and Reintegration center and The Hamlin College of Midwives. We deploy midwives into rural health centers across the country and provide mentoring and other support services to these facilities.
Position Overview
A patient identification Officer (PIO) generally applies his/her medical knowledge and skills to the diagnosis, prevention and management of Fistula patients. He/she does this thoroughly following the principles of inspection where ever applicable to find out the actual Fistula cases. To collaborate and technically support relevant Zonal and Woreda offices and other stakeholders in the prevention of obstetric fistula, Identification and referral of hidden patients and facilitate their treatment.
HFE wants to employ experienced Patient Identification Officers to be part of the Fistula Eradication program interventions, trainings, and mentorship in the areas as per the given job responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Major Duties and Responsibilities of Patient Identification Officer includes the following, but are not limited to:
To coordinate and technically support various Hamlin supported health centers and relevant regional bureaus, woreda offices and other stakeholders in the prevention of obstetric fistula, identification and referral of fistula patients and facilitate their reintegration.
Coordinate activities between, regional health bureaus, zonal health desks, woredas health offices and NGOs dealing with maternal health to identify fistula patients, awareness creation and strengthen the existing referral system
Participate in training of health center and health post staff in identification of ‘hidden’ fistula patients and screening, referral and pre-surgical treatment of fistula patients
coordinate with the reintegration team and organize resources to make sure that individualized plans for patient reintegration and livelihood are appropriately implemented
To prepare monthly report detailing patient treatment activities of the center as per the reporting format, along with any recommendations and submit to the monitoring and evaluation officer
To work closely with outreach centers staff assisting in all aspects of clinical care given as required and assigned by the supervisor
Participate in organizing resources to make sure that individual plans for patient reintegration and livelihood care appropriately implemented
To perform any other related tasks as requested by the supervisor

Education
BSc or MSc Degree in Midwifery and/or in Public Health, HO in maternal and child health related fields
Experience
Minimum 4 yrs. in clinical experience at least in Health Center level, in mobilizing community based programs.
Required Skills/Abilities
Excellent skill of computer software packages
Ability to take appropriate individualized patient history
Ability to screen and confirm obstetric fistula with appropriate method.
Ability to organize training for midlevel heath workers
Strong interpersonal, intercultural communication skills,
Able to work well both within a team and independently under stressful conditions.
Fluent in English, Afaan Oromo, Amharic and other local languages is advantageous
Proven facilitation, team building, and coordination skills.
Willingness and ability to travel for extensive field trip.
Proven analytical and strategic planning skills and ability to prepare evidence based reports
Being an active listener and critical thinker is recommended.
