Job Description

Universal Medical and Business College is a private limited company, established in 2002 as one of the earliest private colleges in Ethiopia, dedicated to training and equipping qualified health professionals in level 4 (diploma) and degree programs in various fields of studies, namely Nursing, Clinical Pharmacy and Public Health Recently, the college has launched a post-graduate program in Public Health in Nutrition. The college has been known by the public for maintaining a good reputation for providing quality education. Currently, the college envisions expanding its programs in various fields of study. Situated around Hayahulet (at the back of Dinberua Hospital), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the college operates its programs on two campuses. Hence, the college would like to invite qualified and interested applicants to apply for the following position:

Job Summary:

Being accountable to the Board of Directors, the President of the college overseas quite a number of programs, and divisions of jobs that exist in two separate campuses and is responsible for ensuring high-quality services are delivered to the clients in addition to monitoring the strategic plan to implement the programs of the college successfully. The President must be focused on ensuring long-term sustainability and securing the colleges’ revenue through possible income-generating schemes and through strategic partnerships with the private sector, commercial investors, development partners, and governments

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities

As the College’s Chief Executive Officer, the President is accountable and reports to the Board of Directors of the college and is responsible for:

  • Articulating the College’s vision, mission, and values with internal and external stakeholders

  • Supporting and enhancing the institution’s academic mission and overall operations

  • Leading the development of strategic plan for the College in consultation with the board, and ensure its implementations

  • Running the College as a business, takes the necessary steps of vertical and longitudinal expansion and maximum possible student enrollment for higher profitability.

  • Exercises utmost possible effort to increase the quality of academic programs and achieve excellence in the market.

  • Building upon the existing traditions, distinctiveness, and strengths of the College

  • Being with the management team, preparing and presenting the budget of the college to the Board of Directors for approval.

  • Securing and developing the budget plan of the college and overseeing the execution.

  • Working with the Board of the college, elected officials, alumni, stakeholders, and the broader community to advance the mission of the College.

  • Representing the college in Public Affairs.

Specific Duties:

  • Providing strategic guidance to the College toward meeting its objectives and delivering its targets;

  • Represents the College on various occasions

  • Serves as the Chairperson of the Managing Council of the Main Office, the Senate, and the College Council and is a nonvoting member and Secretary of the Board.

  • Ensures that the operation of the College is according to the core values, vision, mission, and strategy of the College, the provisions of the Proclamation, and other laws pertinent to the institution.

  • Sets a conducive environment and a high level of staff commitment that is focused on and leads to holistic student development and the graduation of competent and highly integrated individuals.

  • Ensures that the management of the College transpires with adequate subsidiarity and lateral and vertical participation of the staff and the student body such that the College benefits from the collective decision-making that ensues.

  • Ensures that the institution always keeps abreast of the reaches of knowledge and positions itself to develop intelligence and to effectively respond to the country’s needs for know-how, useful consultancy, and research outcomes.

  • Ensures the proper attitudinal changes and capable system of internal leadership and management that is proactive, responsive to student issues, and transformational enough to raise the College’s standard and achievements to an outstanding level.

  • Ensures that the College maintains a healthy balance of income and expenditure, proper books of account of all incomes and expenditures and the completion of annual financial statements and audit reports on on time.

  • Develops and implements standards and ensures that all divisions of the College operate accordingly.

  • Ensures that the meetings of the Board, the senate and the other governing bodies transpire as per their schedules and the minutes are written and kept for easy reference.

  • Resolves by peaceful and legal means all disputes within the College and third parties in such a way the mission and interests of the College are not compromised.

  • Ensures that all fundamental operations and substantive transactions of the College are appropriately documented for easy reference by the pertinent bodies.

  • Informs periodically the Board, owners, government bodies and the public about the State of the College.

  •  Build and maintain reliable safety and security system that protects the life and property of the College

Number of Staff Required: 1 (One)

Duration of Contract: 2 years with possible extension upon best performance

Job Requirements

Experience/ Education Requirements:

  • A minimum of Master’s Degree in Social Science related field of studies of Management, Business Administration, educational administration and the like preferably with Assistant professorship award. A degree in health-related fields of studies is an addition.

  • A minimum of 5 years of practical professional experience in higher level leadership capacity such as serving as Dean, Academic Dean, Vice President or President of a college with responsibilities to oversee multiple operations;

  • Proven leadership experience in managing people and offices through a growth phase;

  • demonstrating the ability to lead a complex academic research institution;

  • Dynamic and entrepreneurial individual with the business development capability to deliver financial sustainability and growth for the College, by forging new business models and developing new income streams;

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including logically structuring and delivering presentations;

  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with the various constituencies of the College, alumni, media, and community at large

  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with elected officials, governmental bodies, stakeholders, owners of the college and the Board of Universal Medical and Business College.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to understand diverse parts of an organization and its stakeholders and beneficiaries and bring them together to realize the organization’s mission;

  • Ability to hire and build an effective administrative team

  • Ability to foster an innovative environment that attracts high-quality faculty, students, and staff by

  • stimulating creativity, research, teaching, and learning

  • Ability to identify opportunities and to convert challenges into innovative solutions and programs that will advance the future of the institution

  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to set priorities and delegate responsibilities;

  • Demonstrated people management and interpersonal skills, with strong leadership qualities to motivate and manage professional staff;

  • Strong commitment to ethical values and transparency;

  • Strong computer skills, with experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook;

  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English and Amharic;
