Who we are
SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people.
Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

We are looking for Project Counsellor who will be responsible to ensure that all beneficiaries are receiving ongoing, age-appropriate verbal or written information in relevant languages about SOS Children’s Villages Child Protection Policy and Code of Conduct.

Your role....
To help all the target children and youths develop skills in the areas of personal/social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development.
To provide services to the target children and youths, and the community on issues pertaining child holistic development.
To coordinates, all counseling services for the target children and youths and to assists in the coordination and implementation of services in the program.
Work with the target children and youths and develop goals.
Educate appropriate coping mechanisms to help the target children and youths through tough situations.
Record the target children and youths progress and change
Implementation of the activities according to the logical framework: counselling, identify cases, creating links with similar organization and partners working on MHPSS, training, IEC tools etc
Conduct/participate in Mental Health and Psychosocial needs assessment among the affected populations. This will include assessments consistent with IASC guidelines and Mental Health Psychosocial WHO assessment toolkit, at different stages of program planning and implementation.
Join or initiate interagency coordination mechanisms for the provision of mental health and psychosocial support for targeted Street children and their families/if available and share relevant information.
Develop adequate PSS tools.
Facilitate community conversations and awareness-raising activities using IEC and public events in collaboration with project staff.
Develop and implement ideas for psychosocial programs with, children in the sites, and vulnerable groups in target sites,
Hold focus group discussions and key informant interviews with the street population in each of these groups in each site in order to assess need
Set up, monitor and develop Youth Empowerment Program (YEP), Child-Friendly Space (CFS) and community-based Psychosocial (PSS) activities in target sites.
Child safeguarding
Responsible to take part in awareness raising sessions and capacity building trainings in relation to Child Safeguarding to prevent and protect children and young people from all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination
Support children and young people to make them understand the CS risks and protection mechanisms
Responsible to report any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately, following Child Safeguarding reporting procedures. CS reports should be made to the CS team at programme level and/or to the respective line manager
BA degree in Psychology, Sociology, or related field with relevant work experiance
2 years’ experience in counseling young people
Competencies – knowledge, skills, abilities
The incumbent requires knowledge of social work theories, practices and procedures.
The incumbent requires knowledge and understanding of all pertinent legislation and policies.
The incumbent requires specific knowledge in the areas of needs assessment, family dynamics, the impact of trauma, psycho social functioning theories and practices and child protection theories, models and practices.
The incumbent requires knowledge of case management, case conferencing and investigation and intervention theories and practices.
The incumbent must be able to respond or assist in emergencies and have very good interpersonal, mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
The incumbent must also has the knowledge of child right and UNCRC
He/she must have well developed organisational, verbal and written communications skills, interviewing and analytical skills and good computer skills.
The incumbent must be flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross-cultural situation and be knowledgeable of the services available in the community. He/she must demonstrate sound judgement particularly in dealing with aggressive caregivers and children at risk.
